A short answer would be...
Miss Liberty in New York Harbor is a statue. The Pieta is a sculpture. Figures usually found in a church are statues. Mount Rushmore is a sculpture.
Q.
A statue refers to any three dimensional replica of a living creature. A sculpture may be a replica of a person or animal, but it also may be any other form such as a body part, an inanimate object, or even an abstract shape. To refer to something as a sculpture is more a matter of how it was created - usually formed by some artistic process such as using tools to whittle a stone or piece of wood, or using one's hands to mold a shape.
So a statue may also be a sculpture, depending on how it was created. A sculpture is not necessarily a statue - it can be many other things.
There are as many definitions of "sculpture" as there are sources. The most comprehensive is: "a three-dimensional work of art." (Encarta)
The same source refers to a statue as: "a three-dimensional image of a human being or animal that is sculpted, modeled, cast, or carved."
Statues and sculptures are commonly confused by layment, as the term is readily interchangeable...However, sculptures and statues are not 100% the same, as a rectangle is consider a square, a statue may be considered a sculpture.
That is to say sculptures are simply a representation of 3 dimensional art. They are a method for transforming a medium such as stone, resin, wood, marble, granite, bronze, plastic, and more. Sometimes sculptures are used as bookends. Sometimes sculptures are used in trophies. Trophy sculptures are quite commonly provided as awards in sports and also in recognition programs.
A statue on the other hand could be a sculpture, but its definition is not as broad. Is the Statue of Liberty as sculpture? You tell me. Its up for debate.
