Does outsider art exist? What is it?

I understand outsider art to be an art form which originates from sidelined artists working from outside the mainstream, from outside the spectrum of appreciated opinion.  Am I right?

I would agree. Check out my comment on a Hub on Outsider Music by SpartacusJones. "Outsider" is a relatively new term. But, in art, the terms "primitive," "realist," "avant garde, "modern," and "post-modern" have been used to describe Outsider Art. Impressiionism started as Outsider Art rejected by the French Academy. Cubism and Futurism were outsider art. And the picture you posted with your question definitely has "primitive" qualities.

Ok great, thanks Sid. One thing though, I read the term 'primitive' is now disregarded as it's 'pejorative' and uncomplimentary. Do you have another similar term you could use? Also any other comments on the above piece of "art"? will read your hub n

Hi Joe - I agree about the term "primitive," some use "naive," but it can have the same problem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Na%C3%AFve_art). Your image. I like the directness, energy, & simple, flat color. The man's mood is conveyed instantly.
