Press on the brake a little, the driver behind you will have to slow down or rear-end you. Here is California, insurance wise, it is your fault if you rear-end someone...you must always leave enough distance to be able to stop.

In Florida it's illegal to hit your brakes with a driver behind you, it may cause an accident, not only do you get a ticket but would be at fault. All you need to do is let your foot off the gas.

Not here, if you rear end the driver in front of you, it's your fault, no matter if he put the brakes on suddenly, You are always expected to leave enough room to stop for any reason. I know someone this happened to recently with their insurance.

it may sound silly but i've been through this. i hit my brakes and the idiot behind me ran into me. he was charged with tailgating or something like that and his insurance fixed my car. the other alternative is to slow down to a crawl and either he will pass you or back off.

While tempting to just stop, I have the baby in the back seat. We have a lot of bicyclists here and whenever I slow down to pass them is when I get someone in a hurry to drive up my rear end.

with a baby in the back that would change things. i have an 8 month old daughter and i drive like a little old lady with her in the car.

Try putting on your emergency blinking lights. If something ran in front of your car forcing you to make a sudden stop, the tailgating clown behind you will have indeed created an emergency.

I usually slow down more and if possible I will keep the same speed as a semi truck and trap them behind me until they get off my bum.
