Most remote controls use infra-red signal to convey messages to the object being controlled. TV and similar devices use infra-red as there is a wide enough range to have varying signals for different controls (ie, volume, channel, digital tv menu etc). The controller will emit infra-red radiation at a set frequency, which will be picked up by an IR receiver in the device. This will convert to an electrical signal, and change the necessary setting.
