How to become a better person for life

Updated on February 2, 2012

Become a better person

Life is short and everyone wants to live it well. Every day comes with new opportunities that beckon us to make the right choices and become a better person. To become a better person we need to fine tuning the good qualities that we an already have in us. All of us desire to be better people. Being a better person not only means that we can have a better quality of life, but also that we can ensure that the people around us enjoy the person that we are.

I would like to quote Duane Alan Hahn who says "You were always a better person inside. All you had to do was peel away the layers"

Become better a person - Make a change

Socrates once said 'Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for.' When we spend time improving ourselves, we become better people, and, as Socrates says, the easiest way is to get there is to follow what others have to impart through their life experiences.

Change is the only constant in life so it would be worthwhile changing for the better. Changing your self for the better improves the quality of life for you, for the people around you as every choice you make affects a group of people. It facilitates acceptance of your self, your potential your circumstance in a positive light and ensures that your journey through life is smoother.

Being a better person helps you appreciate and value others for who they are and to have your priorities right. It reduces stress from outside and helps you grow and develop into a productive and giving person who contributes to the society around. Being a better person calls for taking responsibility for all you do and thereby put the onus for your life squarely on your shoulders, leaving no room for excuses.

How to become better a person?

Accept yourself

Each person is uniquely gifted and special. We need to look at certain qualities in us that are unique and are an asset to us. Honing these attributes and celebrating them would make us better than what we are. This would enable us to look at ourselves as half-full rather than as half-empty. When we develop this attitude, we learn to appreciate and be grateful for the person that we are. We learn to make the best use of what we have and not cry over what we don’t.

Integrity is an important attribute for becoming a better person. It isn’t just about being honest in one’s dealings with others, but also deals with being honest to one’s personal beliefs and values. When integrity is lacking, people may not trust you and will not be willing to invest in you.

Being committed to your spouse or your goals is what makes you achieve happiness and personal satisfaction. Determination is an attitude that can bring success in your every effort. It is an important success habit that does not allow you to abandon anything that you take up halfway. Applying these qualities not only to your goals at work, but also to life in general, especially in making relationships work, will make you a better person.

Think positive

Nurture your mind with great thoughts, for you will never go any higher than you think -Benjamin Disraeli. Positive thinking is a way of choosing right thoughts over negative ones. It is a way of controlling the mind, and enables a person to ask ‘Why not?’ instead of ‘What if?’ This kind of thinking permits a person to accept every challenge that comes their way without allowing the fear of failure to dominate them. It enables them to treat failure as the other side of success, and thus, builds up their resilience and teaches them to overcome failure.

Be open- minded

Keep an open mind to learn from every opportunity. Every new difficulty, problem or person holds some lessons for us to learn. Escaping such situations stops you from learning a new way of coping. New skills have to be continuously acquired, consistently practiced and patiently executed.

Don’t be afraid.

Do not let fear, anxiety and worry dominate your thoughts when you take a decision. Opportunities are the keys to great learning experiences and sustained growth, but fear prevents people from taking up these opportunities and/or persisting with them. Being creative helps you develop as a person. It builds self-confidence and helps to overcome fear.

Make yourself approachable

Being humble is another attribute which makes us more approachable to others. The Bible says, “The humble shall inherit the Earth”. Humility does not mean demeaning yourself or not acknowledging your potential. Humility means accepting reality, accepting our mistakes and being able to work on them. If we can only adopt this attitude, we shall surely inherit the earth.

As human beings, we are endowed with the special gift of communication. Language is our greatest asset. Very often, we use this to put down ourselves or others or to be negative about everything around us. Make a decision today to verbalize only what is positive. Tell people who matter to you that you love them. Listen. Listening is another means of effective communication. When you listen, don’t just listen to the words, but listen to the emotions and the body language and respond from your heart. Communication that is from the heart always strikes a positive chord and makes the other person feel that they are worth being with.

Value people

Respecting people for who they are and treating them right would go a long way in strengthening relationships. Remember to appreciate what is positive and unique about each person and celebrate it. Do not blow the negative attributes out of proportion. When you treat people right, they will treat you right. Not only that, your attitude will help them grow to their maximum potential as people.

Being non- judgmental

In order to value people and to develop healthy relationships, we have to learn to be non- judgmental. A critical nature puts people off; allowing bitterness and critical vocabulary to dominate your speech will ensure that you are isolated. Nobody likes being with a cribber, neither does anyone like being with a person who can never see the positive side of anything or anyone. This nature does not promote growth in others who are constantly associated with you.

Be a giver

The world loves a giver. Give love and spread cheer all around. Make it a point to make difference in someone’s life everyday. Compliment others, give a gift, do something positive to make others feel that you care. Compassion, consideration for others, kindness go a long way in changing the way people perceive and react to you. You will be winning friends, influencing people and very soon, you will be looked up to.

Choose to be happy

Being happy is a choice that you have to make every day in every decision and at every moment. When you make the choice to be happy, you are telling yourself that you are not controlled by situations, circumstances and people outside- your emotions are under control and you are in charge of them. When you develop this habit, external factors have very little influence over your emotions and you are able to take rational decisions without being under stress from other elements.

In conclusion, incorporating all these qualities into our everyday life makes us better people. Not only are we more productive, but we also become more amicable and easy to live with. These attributes endear us to all around us thereby improving the quality of life, both for us and for those who live around us. Most of these attributes may be a part of our personality. We just need to work on them to enhance these traits. In areas where we are lagging behind, we may have to focus a lot of attention and though it may appear to be difficult to change, nothing is impossible.

      Hi sofs,

Really liked the gentle way you portrayed the changes required to "become a better person." Becoming different than you are is always a choice and sometimes the changes required to get there aren't as easy as they might seem. There are often interwoven strands of negativity that must be addressed. It's still a choice and those who choose to undertake the mission of change in spite of the obstacles are those who enjoy the greatest sense of freedom.

Liked what you have done here. Keep it up!

Gajanis, thanks for the comment. All of us have good qualities that need to be honed. Instilling the right values, even when we are little, does make this much easier. But nothing is lost, we can learn and change and walk the road of self improvement every minute of our lives. I am not not sure hoping will take us far, but doing what needs to be done certainly will. I greatly appreciate, your comment and the follow. God Bless!

Excellent doubt all the qualities mentioned by you should be there in a true person to make him or her a better person or I would say a better human being......but in today's materialistic and selfish world we can see fewer people with all these fact, if all these good and positive qualities are instilled in children from the very younger will surely become a habit when they grow up and will carry with them throughout the lifetime, so let's also hope our parents and teachers play their very important role to make a child a better human being of future.Thanks.

Hi Laurel, you are right about that, though some of us fear failure and limit ourselves to the area of the familiar we learn more from mistakes than our successes .. I hope people will draw inspiration from you and open their minds to grab every opportunity that presents itself.

Hello Timorous, all of us need small reminders and little help to get that diamond within us glittering. A little chipping away would help us become better people.

Hello sofs. I couldn't have said it better myself.

You'd think these concepts would come naturally to most people. Unfortunately, most people seem to be wound up with various issues that put up barriers to their ability to get along. They need to strip away those layers of negative thought, and see and accept things for what they really are.
