Program your mind - self help

Step 1- Take an inventory of what is stored in your mind

Even before we jump to the technicalities of programming the mind we need to look at the reasons for failure or mediocrity. “Failure is the stepping stone to success” may sound clichéd, but it is the fact. This analysis will provide the platform from which we can build further.

a) Who / what is the cause of poor performance?

b) Was there adequate planning?

c) Was there sufficient preparation?

d) Were all the resources summoned up?

e) What were the emotional responses at every juncture of difficulty?

The answers to these questions will show us where exactly we went wrong.

Right thinking

If the answer to question (a) is always some other extrinsic factor, you may have to revisit your thought processes. This may mean that you are living in a world of excuses and impaired reality. If your answer to question (e) was that you felt like running away, giving up or felt it was impossible, then you need to work in these areas self esteem, planning, preparation and proper utilization of resources. Most people who engage in negative thinking are ready to give up and run away at the slightest pressure.

You have the resources to make it happen!

Tips for programing your mind - self help

Step - 2 Set your thinking right

Firstly you need to stop giving excuses and evaluate your skill sets or the lack of it, which causes you to churn out poor results. Act on them, get trained or equipped sufficiently in those areas. All resources at your disposal need to be utilized to the optimum levels to fill any gaps in skill development. Giving excuses is giving yourself permission to have the wrong mindset. You need to understand that as long you give excuses, you will never feel the need to change.

At this point you need to write down the thoughts that race through your mind when you consider these vision / goals / tasks.

All negative thoughts have to be countered immediately as most of them are irrational and based on fears / negative experiences rather than well considered conclusions. Replace them with fresh positive thoughts, based on action taken to counter lacunae in required skill sets. Altering these thought processes cause your mind to be automatically reprogrammed.

Step 3 to program your mind to achieve anything

Positive affirmation or power affirmations

Most people need to remind themselves often that success is their birthright. The areas where weakness has been corrected have to be now reinforced with positive affirmations in the form of declaration. If the problem of poor communication has now been addressed, you now need to tell yourself that you are a good communicator and you are confident of yourself. All statements of self affirmation need to be in the present tense. This is like installing the positive affirmation program firmly in your mind.

Some self affirmative statements include:

I am a winner.

I am confident of achieving my goals.

I am a hard worker and I am persistent to the end.

I give my best shot and will leave no stone unturned to make this project a success etc.

Self affirmations need to be done regularly and repeatedly. When it is done repeatedly and with passion, this gets lodged firmly in the subconscious mind.

Step 4 - MInd program

Set your attitude right

The other significant aspect of setting your thinking right is changing your attitude.

Attitude is the degree of an individual’s like or dislike towards people, circumstance or things. Having said this, most often we approach a task with negative attitudes. Our attitude also decides the level of happiness or dissatisfaction with life. It is very important to be in a pleasant state of mind to function at your optimal level.

For example, students decide, even before giving themselves a chance to study, that Mathematics or physics is very difficult. These negative attitudes cause us to react emotionally instead of rationally. Irrational fears get associated with our attitudes making success out of reach.

Remember your first day at a new school - you may have been anxious and nervous, but once the task had been mastered to a certain extent the confidence gained makes the rest of the process a cake walk. So negative attitudes should give place to positive ones.

One more noteworthy attitude that we need to have is to take up any task whole heartedly. A divided mind causes division of focus. Much can be achieved if you have a passion for what you do.

"Wherever you go, go with all your heart" – Confucius.

Visualize and set your mind on fire !

Step 5 of Mind Program - self help

Follow your passion

Know what you want to do , do what you want. Many people pursue careers that are not their passion, not knowing that this is a battle against self. It is hard to fight against yourself and win. It is important to follow your hear. To live your dream you need to start at the end.

Set a personal vision We a ll need a personal vision statement for ourselves. Vision is the means of turning the dream of your life into a reality. This provides a route map to reach your desired destination. Your vision needs to be formally stated and written down. How to write your vision statement is dealt with in How to create your personal vision statement - make your personal vision materialize

The greatest gift ever to mankindis not the gift of sight, but the gift of vision - Miles Munroe.

Step 6 - of programming your mind

Visualize your dream ; ‘see’ it even before it happens in your mind-this is the first creation. Be in touch with your visual imagery and you will not be far from achieving it. The written vision statement and the visual imagery cause the program to be firmly placed in the inner core of your being.

The need for vision and visualization has been dealt with at length in the hub How to create your personal vision statement - make your personal vision materialize and this will give you a fairly good understanding of the process of writing a vision statement and visualization.

Personal goal setting and Action

Since most of these action points have been dealt with in my earlier hubs this is not discussed in much details here.

Break down your goals into smaller achievable modules which are less frightening and more attainable. This has been discussed in detail in Living -end from the beginning.

Acquire the required skills for this particular task/ project. Get the necessary networking done with people and other resources that you have at your disposal. Make optimal use of all these resources. Get mentors , people who support you. It is easier to attain your goals when you have a support system to fall back on.

Chip away all those things that keep you from reaching your goal . It may be people, the television, internet, or even hanging out with friends. Never procrastinate ; putting away tasks that can be done today for another day will only lead to time delays, and loss of passion in the process.

Plan adequately taking into account all scenarios, backup plans should be in place. This gives no excuse for running away.

Step 7 for mind program

Unleash your mind power to achieve success

Mental preparation Mentally prepare to put in a lot of hard work. Be prepared to wait - some things may take longer than others to materialize. Most projects may not bring enough remuneration initially to sustain you, so brace yourself for hardship. Mental preparation to handle tough situations equip us to hang in longer and also to handle the fear of failure which is the main threat to success.

Focus right If your focus is drawn away to other things, like negative reactions of people towards you or your work, you might waste your time getting angry and upset and this will divert your focus. Your dream could be sidelined and you will end up fighting ego wars. Revaluate what out what needs to done and work on it. Do not react but review and respond. This will ensure that your emotions and energy don’t get drained out.

Keep your vision close to your heart. Never forget to bring that picture you had visualized to your mind's eye, ever so often.

Believe in yourself. Do not judge yourself harshly. Don’t judge yourself through someone else’s eyes. Be your best friend. Celebrate even your small achievements.

"Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent".- Eleanor Roosevelt.

Be patient. Success will not evade you. Faith in yourself is paramount to any success.
