The Woodlands, NW of Houston
Although still unincorporated as of 2013, The Woodlands is a place that has 93,800+ residents and its growth is over 36% from 2000 - 2009. From 2009 - 2013, residents increased by nearly 20,000 people again.
The cost of living is over 9% lower in The Woodlands than in America as a whole.
The community began in 1972 as the Mitchell Energy and Development Corporation began to develop a 23,000-acre planned bedroom community for Houston, called The Woodlands. It grew so fast that it became its own separate community.
Businesses moved into the Woodlands, including Chevron Phillips, Anadarko Petroleum, and others, including a large shopping mall and seven golf courses. A concert arena and a large resort are also located nearby. High-rise offices and apartment buildings then grew in the Woodland and increased population and commercial enterprise further. Museums and other attractions have also built in The Woodlands and additional community plans call for additional construction and eventual incorporation.
In 2007, Senator Tom Williams and Representative Robert Eissler passed legislative bills that called for publics vote to allow development of The Woodlands Township to allow sales tax collection, along with other measures. Houston may have wished to annex The Woodlands previously, but because of mutual agreements, Houston will release the community so that it may incorporate itself via a public election in 2014. The Woodlands have similar agreements with nearby Conroe, Texas. The Woodlands will likely become an incorporated city in 2014.
