No better than anywhere else in the world, I suppose. Media in Canada went though (another) upheaval during the height of the recession last year. Much of the headlines went to media giant Canwest's financial troubles, but it was felt in the small towns, too.

In my newsroom of about 25, we had three editors quit and one retire. We replaced them with one full-time equivalent employee (she does two jobs part-time). Ownership came at us with layoff notices for two reporters (one job was saved by a veteran taking an early buyout). It was nearly the identical situation in one of my old newsrooms in Ontario. Ad revenue is down, they say. And I suppose if I'm honest, I notice our classified ad pages are down from 10 to six, and we never go past three sections, anymore.

About two months ago, two competing chains swapped a bunch of small papers in rural areas across the province. It resulted in two 100-year-old small, daily newspapers shutting down. Stay tuned ...
