You pose a good question but unfortunately the world being what it is a password is very necessary. The password protects your work, protects your privacy to some extent, and prevents even accidental, to say nothing of malicious modification of your data, information and work efforts.
If you keep a diary, the old fashion way, in a book; do you leave that out for almost anyone to pick up and read?
It's required because people are always curious to peep into others' "personal" affairs!
