Can Employers change a negotiated contract for retired employees with out the contract being...

renegotiated? Specifically, insurance coverage?  My husband retired in 1998.  He was eligible for group insurance coverage. We have been paying a premium that has been a family rate. Now they are switching to each depentant plus the employee, per person rate. This actually double our cost for insurance. So is that legal considering this was a negotiated contract when the company closed the plant where my husband worked

It is my understanding that if both management and the union decide to open some specific part of a contracted agreement, to alter any points or section, once both mediation teams have agreed to all points in principle to be changed or altered, it must be presented to the union rank and file for approval or radification. If Radified, approved by at least 60% of the union then they can make the changes in that portion effected.
