Do you believe all sales people are created equal?

Do you think great sales talent is born or made?

I think a person can learn, but if you are a good salesman you are usually born with it. My husband couldn't sell you a bottle of water if you were dying of thirst. However, when I was in school we were encouraged to sell different products. I won an award for having the second highest retail sales in the entire school ever. They told me that they thought I might actually be able to sell beach front property in the middle of the dentist.
However, I am not a pushy sales type person. I will only sell a product if I believe in the product!

No profession has people that are created "equal".
There will always be those that are a cut above the rest.
A basketball player could shoot 1000 shots a day and never become the next Michael Jordan.
Some people have more natural talent than others.
I do believe anyone can learn to be proficient.
A person with drive, ambition, determination and a strong work ethic will often oututperform those with natural talent who choose to coast along.

I think its a combination of both. I was definitely not born as one of the greats. It was something that I had to learn. I think great sales people are born. There are some people in the world who just have the natural talent to persuade, however; I think s great sales approach is made. Even someone who has never been comfortable persuading others with their words can lead by example. That's my sales approach. People want to buy what I'm using because they see that it works and that I'm excited about it. It just "happens" that I make money from their purchase. LoL

No, I don't think they are created equal.  Sometimes a sales person is so obvious and so forward I often wonder how they sell anything at all.  To me, the really good sales people make the customer or client feel good and you don't even realize you are being sold something.

Sales people can be made.  Once they learn how to overcome the fear of rejection, then they can implement a plan of action.  Sales is a numbers game.  Closing techniques can be taught.

They are certainly not all created equal, and can be either born or made -- though I personally think a lot of the "made" salespeople have a bit of a disadvantage, because they often start out uncomfortable with sales and have to fight through a lot of mental blocks in order to get there. Alternatively, they often end up acting the way they THINK a salesperson ought to act, and it can take a long time to get past that.

For me, I'm a born salesperson. I've always loved sales and marketing, and they say I've always been good at it, so it's just been a matter of honing and targeting those skills. The key for me has always been that I don't sell anything I don't really believe in, and I don't even try to sell anything that I'm not personally excited about. To do any less smacks of hypocrisy and scamming to me.
