Which professional designation is most sought after for a career in finance, a CFA or CPA, and why?
The most sought after designation is CIO - chief investment officer where rewards are best.
Finance is a diverse field, which means that there are a lot of important designations that could suit you. For accounting, you'd probably want a CPA, or CA in Australia or the UK. For a research position, you'd probably want to consider a CFA. If you work in commodities or alternative asset classes you might want to consider a CAIA. If you want something a little broader you could consider a Master of Finance - although not technically a designation - or an MBA. (Similarly, if you focus on a particular industry you could try a technical designation/(or degree) from that field - I'm studying a Master of Engineering (Mining), because I really enjoying providing corporate finance and strategy advice to mining companies.)
