Does honesty make one a good leader?
People commonly say that honesty is the best policy. But should we question this conventional wisdom? Does being a good leader sometimes entail other factors (e.g. clarity, confidence, relentlessness) above honesty?
Honesty is not something that should come first, second or third place. It is a way of life. If an honest person finds himself in a position of leadership he will be able to face his limitations and surround himself with others who will advice and make up for his faults in judgement. So in reality an honest man opens the door to humility which leads to wisdom and better leadership.
I think honestly to one's own ethics is important. But a leader has to lie by omission all of the time. When people are massed together it's more important to have their good intentions at heart than to be perfectly frank. Sometimes not saying a lot will protect the group from themselves.
