There are alot of other options out there.   It just depends on what type of online work you want to do.

You can make your own blog/website and post articles to it, just like on HP.

You can go to Squidoo, eLance, Guru, Yahoo Contributor Network, oDesk, Triond, FaithWriters...to name a few!  smile

I have several options for making money online. I source for work from Online Working platforms and forums. I also work offline as a Veterinarian

All of my money is made online, and I support a family of five. HP and other open-submission platforms are entertaining and relaxing to me, and they do produce a little bit of recurring income that I like to have, but I can't rely on any of them for more than about 20% of my paycheck. Most of my money comes from my freelancing clients, and I am currently working on building a training program for freelancers in order to build in some leverage while helping others who have a real desire to be entirely self-employed online. In addition, I sell my custom handmade beaded micro-macrame jewelry on the side -- it's what I make to relax and cater to my artistic side a bit more, but it's still beginning to bring in a reasonable amount of income.

When I first started freelancing, I found my clients on the freelance marketplaces (Elance has been the best for me), though now I haven't been on there for a couple of years. This is a great place to start honing skills and making connections. It's tough getting started, but you slowly build up some really high-quality clients that offer the income stability. My high-quality clients have also referred even more really high-quality clients to me, so there's no longer any need for the "shot in the dark" of writing proposals on the marketplaces.

There are many methods as mentioned by fellow hubbers, the key to earning is not just which method you use but how dedicated, patient and innovative you are.

HP or similar is a really good start but then you may want to explore setting up your own blog (check out my profile) and gradually increase your tool box ( I like it, nice term :-) ) of money making online.

    It takes time and patience.

All the best, if you need any help drop me an email.
