Took time off to raise family.  Is a resume with a 10 year gap an effective tool for job search?

Is it ideal ... no. What is important is how you sell yourself. Not only do you have skills from your previous employment ten years ago, but you also have skills from raising a family. It is hard work to raise a family and you probably have excellent time management, organization and problem solving skills. Think of the roles and responsibilities that you had while raising a family and turn those into skills a company could use.

I had an eight year gap with our boys. Don't feel the need to be apologetic about it. You made that choice for a reason. Promote the things you learned during that time, about life skills and about yourself. There are plenty of employers who value those lessons as much as paper qualifications. Good luck with your job hunt.
