Briefly, the difference lies in their approach and purpose. Managers are concerned with running the business and their focus is on systems, policies, governance, budgets, to meet business strategy. A Leader seeks to motivate and engage people to meet the business vision. The two functions can be present in the same person; however, a leader does not necessarily have to hold a senior position but can be a self-motivated non-managerial person who captures people’s will and imagination to work towards a particular outcome.
