Start by getting visitors via google (free and with adwords) and then convert them to buyers with good sales copy and a great offer

My best suggestion is be creative. guerrilla marketing and creative marketing can be VERY profitable.  I actually just wrote a hub on something that does just this for businesses lol.

Anyways to answer your question, it can be VERY profitable. Just watch out for scams.

It depends on your business.  Some businesses can experience tremendous benefits from Internet marketing.  Other businesses may see little to no affect with an online marketing strategy.

Are you saying that the businesses you have concluded get no benefit from internet marketing would see no improvement in either sales, reach, or brand awareness by being on the first page of Google?

Can you give an example of the type of businesses you are talking about in order to substantiate your claim?

Well, Internet Marketing can be effective for your business in many ways, for starters:

    1. It leverages your effort in a big way, e.g. with a million applications available, your message can be available all over the internet at the push of a button.

    2. That will help you to brand your business and establish credibility.

    3. You can tell people from all the four corners of the world rather then being limited to your local area.

    4. It's way cost effective some of the activities only require your time equity.

There are many many ways internet marketing can be effective for your business.

Learn them and use them and you will see.

Internet marketing or online marketing will be very effective it you manage/promote it properly for your business. First thing you need to design a visitor friendly website carrying all about your business and services. Then target the local area or region you want to get your visitors. For this you may take the help of search engines. Some techniques like Search Engine optimization (SEO), Social media marketing, online classified ads posting etc. will help your business promotion and marketing.

Think of Internet marketing (specifically articles, blogs) as the opportunity to put an ad on a billboard.  If have a WordPress site, post articles specific to your business.  Write about the product, the service, the value proposition and the benefits to the consumer.  Fill the billboards!

There are many ways internet marketing can be effective for your business ; yet , there are 3 things to keep in mind :

    1.Keyword Research.
[note : the google adword keyword-tool
is good & it's Free ]find keywords with low competition
    and high-monthly search volume.

    2.Market Research.
[note : ebay is the worlds' largest market place ,
ebay-research can help businesses find 'hungry-markets...
    check out http://pulse.ebay,com/index...to find good
markets ;as well as , http://pulse.ebay.com

    3.Presell , Presell ,Presell.
People are becoming 'ad-blind' because of all the adverts
on the net & as Bill Gates said : 'Content Is King' , this is why article-writing is important.

An online-presence with article-writing requires giving good- content-value to visitors

Online Marketing can increase your sales much faster than the traditional offline marketing methods and for much lower cost.

You can drive free traffic from Google to your site if:

    1) You have a good on-page SEO set up
    2) You upload valuable and unique content on your blog
    3) You post articles on article directories linking back to your sales page with your main keywords as anchor text
    4) You submit posts to high Page Rank "Web 2.0" sites with unique content and linking back to your sites 2-3 times
    5) You create and upload videos to the best video sites with a description including your main and closely related keywords and your URL first in the description
    6) You post answers to questions on relevant themed forums  and having your signature linked with your main keywords as anchor text
    7) You post comments on reputable blogs in your niche that have high page rank and top google page rankings

All these methods can help your business for FREE but it requires some time.

For faster results, in order to get great traffic to your sites and increase your sales try Google Adwords paid advertising program, set a budget that makes you feel comfortable and create super targeted ads to drive targeted and paying traffic.

Always provide great content in your link building eforts.

    Cheers!

Internet marketing should be a part of your marketing mix. Learn where your prospects and customers spend their time researching for what you sell, then go there. Establish yourself as a trusted source of reliable facts on your products or services. The posts made previously have great information and is a tribute to the community on HubPages! Sharing info and experience! Pleas edo not overlook the Internet Marketing you can do within your own customer base. Asking your customers and prospects if they want to be "the first to know" helps build your list for emails, facebook friends and texting. This is often overlooked by people who launch out on the Internet and do not put a valuable asset to work instantly --- your current customers. Even if you start with friends and family. Cheers to your success!

Without knowing what business you are in, if its brick and mortar or an online business its hard to say just exactly what your best way to advertise is but its becoming more of a common practice to have an online presence.

I don't know how many people who publish here even realize they are in business. I promote hub pages, not so much my own hubs than hubs written by others. I don't try to sell people on hub pages. I just let them know information is available here on about any subject they desire.

I know there are more sites becoming available (free) which let you advertise in your local area. My corporation gives these away to anyone interested.

There is an up and coming program, just launched which is people helping people with brick and mortar businesses. They are in the testing phase at the moment and as more people get involved they intend to take it world wide. For businesses there is cost involved but its cost effective, and targeted at the local market.

For advertising online businesses there are really two best ways to get free and low cost advertising which are effective. One takes a little time daily, the other takes a few minutes longer. One works well if you have your own website, the other works well to advertise anything.

So to answer your question online advertising is effective and cost effective compared to other sources.
