How to Earn $1000 a Month Writing at Hubpages

Updated on July 1, 2014
Laptop
Laptop | Source

Initially I started writing at Hubpages for fun, but we all can use more money. Now I am focusing on that. I don’t think it would be hard for anyone to make a $1000 a month at Hubpages, as long as they put in the time and effort, plus have the patience needed.

In an average month you can earn about $1.00 per hub with the Hubpage Ad program,, eBay, and Google Adsense. You'll find certain hubs earn more money than others. A rule of thumb that I've heard is to plan on 20% of your articles will earn 80% of the money. So this amount is doable. Many hubbers earn much more than this per hub.

How to Do It

I’ve read about one man that earns $3000 a month with around 250 articles and another that only earns $60 for the same number. What you will earn depends on how much time you put into your content and how well you choose your topics. Topics need to be specific. For instance, I wrote an article “How to Grow Lilies.“ It didn’t do well on Google. Once I changed it to “How to Grow Asiatic Lilies”, it gets more traffic.

Choosing the right niche to write about and the right keywords may be the most important part of writing for money. Some of my hubs earn nothing and one earns $30 a month. Many say they earn much more for some of their hubs. You can cut your work down if you choose the right keywords.

If your hubs are at least 8 months old and you are not earning at least an average of $1 a month per hub, you need to take a hard look at what you are writing about and learn some SEO (search engine optimization.) It can take a year of experimenting to find which topics get good traffic. This is where the patience comes in. As hubs age, they also rank better with Google and earn more money. If you aren't writing about the right niche though, you may not earn anything. Many say the formula is 20% of their hubs earn 80% of the money. I have hubs that get little traffic too.

Using simple arithmetic, you would need 1,000 hubs then to earn $1000. Many will do much better than this. If you can write 3 hubs a day for a year, you would have about that many at the end of a year. You may have a head start already, so it will give you days that you can have off. My bet is that you will end up earning more than the $1000 when you are finished.

I don’t have the time to write 3 articles in a day, but I can write 1 a day if I keep at it. After 3 years, I would have the 1000 hubs completed. Since my hubs will keep aging during that time, I would expect to make more than $1000.

I don’t know about you, but $1000 would go a long way towards retirement. If you follow the plan for 3 years and you complete 3 hubs a day, you may be able to quit that day job. I would spend some of that time on other writing sites though, so your eggs aren’t all in one basket. Creating your own websites is good too. Stashing money away in a bank account wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

Thank you for your reply. Almost everything on the Internet is dependent upon Google. It is hard to make money this way. But we all keep trying.

      Take care,

Larry, Mine earnings aren't doing as well as they once were. Google quit liking Hubpages as well and my earnings went down. Since then, I spend most of my time writing for my website instead.

I know what you mean about political articles. I've written a few and ended up deleting them after a year, because they got almost no traffic. Congratulations on the political columns. Thanks for reading.

I commend you for your success. My hubs are on political issues, such as faith, justice, gun rights, political parties, oil and gas issues and a few about personal issues. I do not make any significant money. Adsense disappered and I have to check on that, Amazon produced no funds and I wanted no part of e-bay.

I guess I will continue to be a "poor" writer.

I write for two content mills where I make about $200 per month and my political columns has attracted the attention of a person who wants to do a separate site and is taking the right steps.

Hackslap, That hub was written a few years ago before Hubpages got slapped by Google. I don't earn that much now. There are writers here that earn good money per hub, but you need to be knowledgeable about the right topics. My expertise has to do with women's topics and they just don't do as well as some others.

Your income should increase as your articles age, but sadly most writers aren't earning what they once were. You are going to need double the work to earn that much. I wish great success for you. Thanks so much for commenting and reading my hubs.

What an inspiring article Barbara .. I've just joined HP around 8 months ago and have 54 articles ..(averaging a buck to $1.50 per day ...and that's cumulative earnings ...not per hub) .. sometimes I get a bit disheartened about it but am determined to earn AT LEAST $2k a month ... and I know that's not entirely unachievable... ...once again..Great hub!

Rich W2K, I'm happy that I wrote it and you found it so useful. Good luck and I've found that if you write the right hub, you can do much, much better than the $1 per article. I'm never going to get the 1000 hubs written myself, but you can earn good money here if you work at it. Thanks for commenting.

I think the idea of earning $1000 from 1000 hubs was one of the major reasons that I started on HP. Could it have been this article that I found on Google? Even if it wasn't, this hub is still amazing. I tried to read as many comments as I could because the HP community provides so many excellent tips within the comments but there's just so many. Thanks for the info.

supermom-in-ny, I've tried Squidoo, but never put much effort into it. I wrote about 5 lenses. Out of the 5, only one does well. Here, I do better than that. Eventually, I need to put more effort elsewhere so all my eggs aren't in one basket. Thanks for commenting.

This is great advice! Writing one hub a day is a lot easier than 3 or even 10 a day. Slow and steady gets things accomplished! I have had more success on my own blogs and Squidoo then I have here. Don't get me wrong. I make sales and payments, but nothing close to the $1000. a month I earned at Squidoo. I'm back again to try something new. Why? I agree with you that $1000. extra dollars a month can go a long way towards retirement (or in my case a better lifestyle in the near future). Gave you a thumbs up! ;)

This would be great if I actually made $1 per hub per month but I'm not even close. I calculated mine out and I make like $0.25 per hub per month. So, I would need around 4000 hubs to make $1000 per month. : (

I have to say I earn very little from ads, most of what I earn comes from HP. That being said, after 23 months I have yet to find my niche (I am nowhere near $1000 per month but I have seen my earnings gradually increase since I have been here, giving validity to you theory about more hubs. I occasionally write book reviews and believe it or noy my hub about the third Fifty Shades of Gray books has over 100,000 views!

Good advice, voted up and useful.

Oh that would be great! I'm signed up for the Ad program but it's incomplete due to Adsense. I thought about joining the apprenticeship program, but I am not sure since I don't have the Adsense. I may have to shift over to doing my recipes on a blog to get that going. I wonder how much I'd have to do on my blog before that could be approved. I actually can't even put a new URL for Adsense when I try to go to the Adsense homepage... it automatically takes me to the resubmit application page for http://hubpages.com/@neinahpets :(

I didn't see you mention backlinks. I recently learned about backlinks. I try to spend 4 days writing and the 5th day on backlinks each week. I noticed my earnings doubled last month, after starting that strategy. I'm expecting them to triple from the original amount by the end of this month. I also use the 5th day to edit old hubs for better SEO. I'm still learning about SEO but it's all starting to pay off. I also plan to move all my non-travel related hubs to a new hub site. That will also improve my google rankings - to keep one hub site per niche. Thanks for your info. I enjoyed reading your article! It helps to carry on for the long-haul when you know others are "in it with you" so to speak :)

Neinahpets, I made the suggestion to Hubpages that they let the new hubbers be in the Hubpage Ad program. I hope they listened, because I know it is discouraging. Maybe you should try your own blog or website to get approved. That is the way I did it and then I could use it here on Hubpages. Hubpages is well worthwhile, because you can earn really good money.

This tells me there is a huge problem with my hubs. I have over 200 hubs which in 7 days collectively earn $17. Thank you for sharing ....ok...now I have a lot of work to do. I never go back and refine hubs that are just sitting this is where I could really get the kinks out of poor performing hubs. Voted up and useful.

It is always good to read hubs about the ability to earn reasonable money from Hubpages. I have set myself a goal of achieving 100 hubs by the end of this year - nowhere near the number you suggest, however the amount I am trying to earn is less than a$1000.00 per month. I do agree though that you need to write the right hubs. I published one hub - a movie review that has never received a view. When I first published it I did not include a photo and I think that stopped it from being forwarded to my followers.

I hope at some point I am able to reach this... or anything for that matter. I am not sure why Google Adsense wants nothing to do with my hubpage. I have 1100+ hubviews and 22 featured hubs (all of them). It's rather disheartening. My account information is American so it's not like I'm bound to a 6 month dealy. hoov45, I've had some hubs like that too. They've got great content and pics and they just sit there. The saying goes that 20% of your hubs will earn 80% of the money. You've got to hit some good topics to make up for the poor traffic ones. Mine are doing a little better than the 20/80. Watch the topic that do well and write more about them. I have 21 hubs and have been here for a week and would love to have some profits from what I have done (I am within 20 views of 1000 page views).

All of my hubs are featured except the one I just wrote that is still pending; 90% of them having a Hubscore over 70-75, and the rest in the upper 60's.

That said, I think I could be successful at it... maybe. Everyone has told me my stuff is looking to be really nice but I have been rejected many times by Google Adsense despite that and until I get there I can't earn anything.

Great article though, it gives me insight into what I can obtain if I get approved. Voted up.

I'm loving the information. I'm still new to the hub game and I'm working with what time I have to write quality content. Reading great posts like this really keeps me encouraged to keep going and not give up on it. Thanks for taking the time out to speak life into this venture! Voting up and useful!

I would love to earn 1k a month but for now Im focusing on a much smaller goal to not get discouraged. I tend to be one of those set goals to high, get discouaged and stop all together people. So for me $100.00 per month is my short term goal. Although I aspire to be so much more here at Hubpages. Good article.

      Thanks for sharing.

talfonso, I guess writing this much isn't for everyone. I thought of starting another business too, but for right now I am doing well on Hubpages. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm not aiming for $1000 in Hub revenue. I'm making enough so I can save for vacations. Besides, I started an at-home business last year and am in the process of getting a job (not just to gain more business partners and customers).

But anyway, that's really sound advice for a sound Hub.

Casimiro, Best of luck on the goals you have. I have weeks where I write quite a few and then I have weeks that I don't accomplish much and I feel like I'm not sticking to my plan. My earnings keep going up, so I'm still hoping to reach this goal. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Rhonda, Thanks and it is attainable if you stick to it and learn SEO etc. I hope to see you in the top earners one day. Thanks for reading and voting it up.

My goal is 5 hubs per week. I tried 1 per day but some days I just don't have my muse or other things are going on. I try to do a little SEO especially on the title, but most of my hubs are very recent so I can't see real results yet. I did ditch Amazon for eBay as Amazon ads (on my blogs, too) don't seem to convert well.
