How to Earn $1000 a Month Writing at Hubpages

Updated on July 1, 2014
Laptop
Laptop | Source

Initially I started writing at Hubpages for fun, but we all can use more money. Now I am focusing on that. I don’t think it would be hard for anyone to make a $1000 a month at Hubpages, as long as they put in the time and effort, plus have the patience needed.

In an average month you can earn about $1.00 per hub with the Hubpage Ad program,, eBay, and Google Adsense. You'll find certain hubs earn more money than others. A rule of thumb that I've heard is to plan on 20% of your articles will earn 80% of the money. So this amount is doable. Many hubbers earn much more than this per hub.

How to Do It

I’ve read about one man that earns $3000 a month with around 250 articles and another that only earns $60 for the same number. What you will earn depends on how much time you put into your content and how well you choose your topics. Topics need to be specific. For instance, I wrote an article “How to Grow Lilies.“ It didn’t do well on Google. Once I changed it to “How to Grow Asiatic Lilies”, it gets more traffic.

Choosing the right niche to write about and the right keywords may be the most important part of writing for money. Some of my hubs earn nothing and one earns $30 a month. Many say they earn much more for some of their hubs. You can cut your work down if you choose the right keywords.

If your hubs are at least 8 months old and you are not earning at least an average of $1 a month per hub, you need to take a hard look at what you are writing about and learn some SEO (search engine optimization.) It can take a year of experimenting to find which topics get good traffic. This is where the patience comes in. As hubs age, they also rank better with Google and earn more money. If you aren't writing about the right niche though, you may not earn anything. Many say the formula is 20% of their hubs earn 80% of the money. I have hubs that get little traffic too.

Using simple arithmetic, you would need 1,000 hubs then to earn $1000. Many will do much better than this. If you can write 3 hubs a day for a year, you would have about that many at the end of a year. You may have a head start already, so it will give you days that you can have off. My bet is that you will end up earning more than the $1000 when you are finished.

I don’t have the time to write 3 articles in a day, but I can write 1 a day if I keep at it. After 3 years, I would have the 1000 hubs completed. Since my hubs will keep aging during that time, I would expect to make more than $1000.

I don’t know about you, but $1000 would go a long way towards retirement. If you follow the plan for 3 years and you complete 3 hubs a day, you may be able to quit that day job. I would spend some of that time on other writing sites though, so your eggs aren’t all in one basket. Creating your own websites is good too. Stashing money away in a bank account wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

I would agree with you that for most people (including myself) the best approach is to gradually build earnings over time. It took me 3 months on here, before I began to appreciate that.

Very interesting hub. I am already halfway there to those earnings from Adsense. I do not use the Hubpages Ad Program though because I tried it three times and each time it cut my Adsense earning by about 80% a day and I was only getting an average of $2 to $3 a day from the Ad Program.

But I have read that many hubbers make lots of money from it.

Your advice is spot on. It took me well over a year to finally learn enough about writing for the internet and SEO to get a decent payout every month.

Like you say though once you have worked out just what does work then it is a matter of writing as many articles as you can when time allows.

      Voted up and awesome

Barbara, I am with you all the way. I am not earning much but as mu hubs age my earnings go up. I see Google traffic picking up and I want HP to be my primary source of income. I currently freelance so it doesn't give me time to work on my novels, so if HP is my source of income I could relax a little more, concentrate on my hubs and finishing my novels.

Great hub! I am not making anything so far. I can't even figure out where the few cents each month that I made went to as a whole total in general.

    • sunforged profile image

Hi Barbara, this article is to help you judge how you can reach that goal and even perhaps expand it just a bit higher. I wont be offended if you don't publish the comment. But take a quick look at the math/data on the page. I just didn't feel like copying any of the numbers over.

The article is from pre-panda hubpages - but the traffic to earnings ratios should still hold mostly true.

      http://hubsacademy.com/28/featured/make-100-dollar...

I see that you are judging that you average $1 day per hub, but if you dig in and find which articles are earning you several dollars compared to those that earn you very little and try to repeat the successful topics/layouts/terms you can quickly start to increase that earnings amount and the time frame in which you can achieve them! It really is very possible.

    • Barbara Kay profile image

Barbara Kay Badder 5 years ago from USA

lucybell, You just need to write more articles to see more earnings. You only have 16 at this point and when I had that many, I didn't see any real earnings either.

sunforged, Thanks for pointing that out. I meant $1 per month per hub. It was a typo error. I changed it. I only wish I could earn the $1 a day per hub, but I haven't come across any subjects that earn that kind of money yet.

1000 hubs @ $1 a month each would earn me that money though. I only wish I could find subjects that paid me more.

Barbara Kay, this is quite a motivational hub. I am at the stage where I would be joyful to see a hundred dollars a month. If I saw one thousand the ambulance might just have to be called. I understand that niches have a lot to do with it but I have not found one that interests me as yet. Also time is a big factor. I find that I have less and less time to research. Great Hub and enjoyed reading all the comments so far. This is the kind of honest information I am looking for. I just wrote & published my 1st Hub a couple of days ago..so I'm a BIG-OL-Newbie! Not new to writing, but new to hubs. Anyway, I've learned quite a bit in a short time about this process. I think one of the main keys to attracting traffic IS to write about what OTHERS may be searching around the internet for on a day-to-day basis! Write what YOU know, but also learn other things/ideas and write about what OTHERS want to know and learn about. Wishing everyone good luck! Thx for the Hub & great comments; very encouraging!!

It is good to have goals and a plan. As they say, "Plan your work and work your plan." My plan is for a minimum of 3 hubs a week. I see my income only going up about $1. a month right now. I have only been here 4 months, so I know that will start to improve. I have never been a patient person, but to make up for that I am VERY stubborn and do not give up easily. We learn as we go and I plan to keep on going too. Good luck and God's speed! :)

The Panda is something Google is using to determine which pages should rate best in their search engine. They love Hubpages one minute and then the next they don't like us anymore. Now that each hubber has their own subdomain, Google likes some hubbers and some it doesn't. Panda can change at anytime and your traffic will suddenly go down to nothing. It can be depressing.

And your 20-80 rule seems to be the case for not only money, but for traffic. I get about 500 views per day for all my sites and it seems that around five of those get the vast majority.

Obviously I am missing something as I don't earn anywhere near the amount per hub that you are suggesting, and I have 105 hubs right now. I keep going back and refining titles, etc...but I'm not sure I really understand how to use the keyword tool. And just when I started making about $30 a month, my earnings and views dropped by more than half...and I don't know why other than that Google hit me again.

I'm glad you are doing so well, but I haven't been that fortunate. It all sounds good, but people like me don't really understand some of what people like you say, so it's a hit and miss thing. I have three hubs that account for almost 1/3 of my views, which I think is totally insane.

      It gets depressing, sometimes!

Hunbbel, I am giving just an average of how much my individual hubs earn. You can figure you own by looking at your total traffic and how much you earned and dividing it. Then look at each individual hub and see how much traffic that one got.

It isn't a fantasy at all. For me the fantasy would be writing enough hubs. I just don't always have the time or inspiration to keep writing. The main neccesessity is finding a niche that is right. You need to do your keyword search and learn which works best by trial and error.

      Thanks for reading.

Rajan Jolly, I am just doing the math to find out how much my hubs earn. I figure if a hub can get 10 visits every day outside of hubpages, it earns $1 a month. That would be 300 views a month. The earnings vary everyday for how much the Hubpage Ad program pays, so it isn't entirely accurate, but just an estimate.

Not every one of my hubs earn their keep, but many earn much more and make up for the ones that lag behind. Keyword search and experimentation with different niches is the key to success. Titles are important too. Always use topic and titles that people search for and make sure your hub is better than the competition's.

Millionaire Tips, I think it has everything to do with what you are writing about. So many topics have millions of articles written about it. You need to look for a different slant than they have. Look over your 200 articles and see which ones are getting good traffic. Write some more articles about that niche. Good luck in the future.

moonlake, You can get a good average on how much each hub earns by the traffic it gets. If you get $4 for 1000 views, then 100 views would be earning $.40. If you hub is getting 10 views per day, then it is getting about 300 per month, which would mean it earns $1.20 per month. This is all approximate since different days the rate is different.

This is an excellent hub with great advice, broken down so that it is easy to follow advice.

When I say easy to follow, I mean easy to understand the actual writing of three hubs a day is beyond me as I find putting a hub together takes me ages. I think it is my age lol...

Plus, once I get started, I find that I check out my facts and that often leads me on a rabbit chase, it is so easy to get distracted.

I found this very useful; I like the idea of having a plan something to aim at so thank you very much for posting this.

It sounds like a pretty reasonable plan to me! I don't relly have time to even write 1 a day sadly, but I think the slowely building your number fo hubs plan will still work, might just take me a littl elonger! lol! I'm nowhere near earning $1 per hub a month yet, but I think it is a reasonable estimation when you have hundreds of hubs written and they are all well established. I have 59 hubs in total I think, and 2 of them bring in 1/3 of my traffic so I think I need to do some more along the same line as them! If I can just break the payout every month threshold that would be an awesome start! I'd like to just pay off 1 bill a month from my hubs, it would be a great start and a great help! Its all about slowely building quality hubs I think. thanks for a great, inspiring hub. Voted up and shared

I have a theory that the best way to make money on HubPages is to write hubs about how to make money on HubPages. But this one was very good, with practical information and not just the usual vague "Oh just write high quality hubs." Sure - I'll get right on it.

Hope you hit $1K a month soon!

    • Barbara Kay profile image

Kathleen, The theory doesn't work, because my hubs about that aren't making much money. Too many people are writing about the same thing and I don't think when traffic is counted for the Hubpage Ad Program that visitors from Hubpages count. Just a small amount of the income I earn comes from Google Adsense.

I have 21 hubs and have been here for a week and would love to have some profits from what I have done (I am within 20 views of 1000 page views).

All of my hubs are featured except the one I just wrote that is still pending; 90% of them having a Hubscore over 70-75, and the rest in the upper 60's.

That said, I think I could be successful at it... maybe. Everyone has told me my stuff is looking to be really nice but I have been rejected many times by Google Adsense despite that and until I get there I can't earn anything.

Great article though, it gives me insight into what I can obtain if I get approved. Voted up.

hoov45, I've had some hubs like that too. They've got great content and pics and they just sit there. The saying goes that 20% of your hubs will earn 80% of the money. I hope at some point I am able to reach this... or anything for that matter. I am not sure why Google Adsense wants nothing to do with my hubpage. I have 1100+ hubviews and 22 featured hubs (all of them). It's rather disheartening. My account information is American so it's not like I'm bound to a 6 month dealy. I've made $0 from any other source that I could make money from and I am not even sure if I could at this stage. Ahh one day I will reach this, I hope. Great hub Barbara!

It is always good to read hubs about the ability to earn reasonable money from Hubpages. I have set myself a goal of achieving 100 hubs by the end of this year - nowhere near the number you suggest, however the amount I am trying to earn is less than a$1000.00 per month. I do agree though that you need to write the right hubs. I published one hub - a movie review that has never received a view. When I first published it I did not include a photo and I think that stopped it from being forwarded to my followers.

This hub is straight to the point. I really like your strategy its simple and easy to follow. According to your math making $1.00 a day on hubs is interesting. This tells me there is a huge problem with my hubs. I have over 200 hubs which in 7 days collectively earn $17. Thank you for sharing ....ok...now I have a lot of work to do. I never go back and refine hubs that are just sitting this is where I could really get the kinks out of poor performing hubs. Voted up and useful.

Neinahpets, I made the suggestion to Hubpages that they let the new hubbers be in the Hubpage Ad program. I hope they listened, because I know it is discouraging. Maybe you should try your own blog or website to get approved. That is the way I did it and then I could use it here on Hubpages. Hubpages is well worthwhile, because you can earn really good money.

I didn't see you mention backlinks. I recently learned about backlinks. I try to spend 4 days writing and the 5th day on backlinks each week. I noticed my earnings doubled last month, after starting that strategy. I'm expecting them to triple from the original amount by the end of this month. I also use the 5th day to edit old hubs for better SEO. I'm still learning about SEO but it's all starting to pay off. I also plan to move all my non-travel related hubs to a new hub site. That will also improve my google rankings - to keep one hub site per niche. Thanks for your info. I enjoyed reading your article! It helps to carry on for the long-haul when you know others are "in it with you" so to speak :)

Oh that would be great! I'm signed up for the Ad program but it's incomplete due to Adsense. I thought about joining the apprenticeship program, but I am not sure since I don't have the Adsense. I may have to shift over to doing my recipes on a blog to get that going. I wonder how much I'd have to do on my blog before that could be approved. I actually can't even put a new URL for Adsense when I try to go to the Adsense homepage... it automatically takes me to the resubmit application page for http://hubpages.com/@neinahpets :(

I have to say I earn very little from ads, most of what I earn comes from HP. That being said, after 23 months I have yet to find my niche (I am nowhere near $1000 per month but I have seen my earnings gradually increase since I have been here, giving validity to you theory about more hubs. I occasionally write book reviews and believe it or noy my hub about the third Fifty Shades of Gray books has over 100,000 views!

Good advice, voted up and useful.

This would be great if I actually made $1 per hub per month but I'm not even close. I calculated mine out and I make like $0.25 per hub per month. So, I would need around 4000 hubs to make $1000 per month. : (

This is great advice! Writing one hub a day is a lot easier than 3 or even 10 a day. Slow and steady gets things accomplished! I have had more success on my own blogs and Squidoo then I have here. Don't get me wrong. I make sales and payments, but nothing close to the $1000. a month I earned at Squidoo. I'm back again to try something new. Why? I agree with you that $1000. extra dollars a month can go a long way towards retirement (or in my case a better lifestyle in the near future). Gave you a thumbs up! ;)

supermom-in-ny, I've tried Squidoo, but never put much effort into it. I wrote about 5 lenses. Out of the 5, only one does well. Here, I do better than that. Eventually, I need to put more effort elsewhere so all my eggs aren't in one basket. Thanks for commenting.

I think the idea of earning $1000 from 1000 hubs was one of the major reasons that I started on HP. Could it have been this article that I found on Google? Even if it wasn't, this hub is still amazing. I tried to read as many comments as I could because the HP community provides so many excellent tips within the comments but there's just so many. Thanks for the info.

What an inspiring article Barbara .. I've just joined HP around 8 months ago and have 54 articles ..(averaging a buck to $1.50 per day ...and that's cumulative earnings ...not per hub) .. sometimes I get a bit disheartened about it but am determined to earn AT LEAST $2k a month ... and I know that's not entirely unachievable... ...once again..Great hub!

    • Barbara Kay profile image
      Author

Barbara Kay Badder 3 years ago from USA

Hackslap, That hub was written a few years ago before Hubpages got slapped by Google. I don't earn that much now. There are writers here that earn good money per hub, but you need to be knowledgeable about the right topics. My expertise has to do with women's topics and they just don't do as well as some others.

Your income should increase as your articles age, but sadly most writers aren't earning what they once were. You are going to need double the work to earn that much. I wish great success for you. Thanks so much for commenting and reading my hubs.

I commend you for your success. My hubs are on political issues, such as faith, justice, gun rights, political parties, oil and gas issues and a few about personal issues. I do not make any significant money. Adsense disappered and I have to check on that, Amazon produced no funds and I wanted no part of e-bay.

I guess I will continue to be a "poor" writer.

I write for two content mills where I make about $200 per month and my political columns has attracted the attention of a person who wants to do a separate site and is taking the right steps.
