How to Use RSS Feeds - an Idiot's Guide

Updated on December 5, 2012
Source

First, a disclaimer . . . .

First of all, the RSS feed option has been discontinued for hubs on HubPages. That use was the initial reason that I wrote this hub. I was so excited to finally--with the help of some hub friends--figure out RSS feeds!

Still, even though you won't be able to use RSS feeds on hub articles, perhaps this article will still give you a basic idea of what they are and how they work, helping you to use them on your blogs or other sites.

RSS feeds can be very helpful because they keep content fresh with updating relevant, similar hubs on a feed. I hope you'll find this hub helpful!

RSS Feeds 101 for Dummies

Dear reader, you are not the idiot, nor are you the dummy. That would be me. Months ago, when I started on HubPages, I had no idea what RSS feeds were. Over time, I began to hear some about them, so I tried to learn more. I was so clueless, though, so much that even reading everything I could find about them didn’t help. Everything went over my head. I think it took a lot of time, reading instructions from different perspectives, and someone to personally help me along.

So here we go. If you know little to nothing about RSS links and how to use them, perhaps you can learn from a dummy who only recently learned. If I can learn how to use RSS feeds (and love them!), I am sure that you can, too.

RSS feeds should link related content . . .

I tried to use RSS feeds with a formula I found somewhere that brought up my latest hubs, but the hubs weren’t related to the content of the hub I had published. That is a no-no. Any links posted on a hub should be related to the hub topic itself.

Let’s go through this now step by step.

First, when you are in edit mode on a hub, look for the RSS feed in the upper right hand box that contains various capsules that you can choose. See photo below.

See the orange symbol with "rss" to the right of it? Click on that. The RSS box will open up at the bottom of the hub and will look like this:

Basic Formula for RSS Feed URL

You need to insert a url in the line that says Feed URL. This feed will provide the capsule with fresh content as it takes newer or perhaps more popular (you will choose) hubs from your repertoire and shows them in the feed. I am giving you the basic formula to use that you will modify to your specific hub topic every time you want to use an RSS feed. Don’t lose it! This formula was given to me by another hubber writer, and I keep the link saved in a Word document to copy and paste into my hubs as needed.

Here is the basic formula, minus the name Victoria Lynn and the shopping topic:

http://www.hubpages.com/author/Victoria+Lynn/shopping/latest?rss

Make the URL specific

Now, unless you want my hubs to show up in your feed (fine with me!), you will change the author name to your own. Make sure you put a plus sign between words. Then you will change shopping to the topic you want to highlight from your own hubs. The particular link shown will bring up all my latest shopping hubs at the end of a hub about shopping. I can change the word shopping to poetry or recipes or saving money or any other topic I want to show up. With the saving money example, I will add a plus sign between “saving” and “money.”

Where the url says "latest," you can also change that to “best” or “hot” to change which hubs show up. I find it fun to play with this, inserting the different words to see which of my hubs show up. Notice that you can choose up to 8 Hubs. I usually choose three or four, perhaps fewer or more depending on how the layout of the hub looks.

"Hubs about hubs" is the tag I use on hubs that talk about hubs!
"Hubs about hubs" is the tag I use on hubs that talk about hubs!

Use consistent tags to group hubs!

Now, for this to work right, you must have added the key words in the tags when you wrote the hub. If you haven’t, go back through all your related hubs and add the same tag in all of them. I had to do that with some of my poetry, as some of them had “poem” as a tag while others had “poetry.” Add the same tag to all the hubs you want to show up under one topic.

RSS feeds give hubs fresh material--or so I thought.

I used to add other related hubs by clicking on links and adding in the url. While that works fine, it is more time consuming than using RSS feeds, and it doesn’t update with new material as additional articles in the related field are published. RSS feeds will automatically update your hub with fresh material as you write new stuff, something that Google, I hear, actually likes. I still use the links and fill in urls of other of my or other hubbers’ hubs if I want specific ones to show up. If you don’t mind which of your recipes show up on a recipe hub, using an RSS feed is the way to go! Give the capsule a title such as "More Recipes from Victoria Lynn."

I hope this explanation from this dummy has helped. I know that you can also subscribe to an RSS feed on another blog or website. I don't know how all that works, though. That would be a topic for advanced dummies. If you do know how that works, write a hub about it and maybe our hubs can hook up and complement each other.

Use the link capsule and hyperlinks instead of RSS feeds

Seriously, if something is still unclear in this idiot's guide to using RSS feeds, please let me know in the comments section, and I’ll try to explain further to make it clear. With RSS feeds discontinued on HubPages, perhaps you will use this information in some future venue. For now, stick to adding links via the link capsule and by using hyperlinks within the text of your hub to link similar hubs.

cascoly--Yeah, I wonder if few people used RSS feeds because they simply didn't know how? It took me a long time. Oh, well. Thanks for your input.

I use them both here and for my photography website thru wordpress.

the fix above will work until HP removes the capability in Feb. I'm working on another way to create an RSS of hubs, but it will require another website to use it

if so few people [they claim] were using it, dont see why they couldnt just leave it alone rather than breaking everyone's hubs

I know, cascoly. That really stinks. Do people use RSS feeds much elsewhere? I liked them, but I guess they were probably overused. Thanks for the comments.

    • cascoly profile image

cascoly 4 years ago from seattle

unfortunately HP has removed both RSS feeds and Tags, so this very helpful hub no longer works.

a quick fix to use an rss for all your hubs is:

      http://cascoly.hubpages.com/hubs/latest?rss

just replace cascoly with your hubpages name and it will generate a list of all your hubs

i've found a better overall solution and will post after i debug it

That is all that I can think of - the only thing that I changed on this hub, other than the rss feed, but i added that all of my hubs and they are doing about the same. This one dropped for the first time below 96 to 85 - as soon as I took the widget off, it jumped almost instantly to 87 and is now at 88 and holding (same day) - I googled it and it is still on page one.

radiant--You might read up on the HubPages blog about this stuff. There are no more tags, but HP is putting them in automatically, it seems. We'll see how that goes.

I don't know about your traffic falling like that, as I have been here only a bit over a year. Maybe it will pick back up. :-)

    • profile image

      radiantwriting 4 years ago

That makes my brain hurt!!! After all that research!!! Last night I post a hub and there were no "Tag" options - this happened before about a year ago, not sure what's up with that. Have you ever had a hub that ran at a high score with a lot of traffic for three years and then for no reason fell from 95-100 to 85 and the traffic slowed down quite a bit????

radiant--I'll check out what they say on Sitemaps, but I probably won't understand it either. Hey, re: RSS feeds--did you hear or read that HubPages is phasing them out? So we'll have to remove them from our hubs, or HP will in February. I guess learning how to do them wasn't for nothing, but . . . bummer.

    • profile image

LauraGSpeaks--I've been noticing that, too, that the RSS feed sometimes repeats the featured hubs at the bottom. I have stopped using RSS feeds as much, particularly on those hubs where I know some good hubs will come up in the groupings. Another way--you can change what shows up as featured at the bottom by going to your groups on your account page and moving the titles around to change the order. At least, then, you won't be repetitive. I'm trying to be more careful about that, because I don't think that's a good thing.Still, I think RSS feeds are helpful at times and a way to keep content updated.

I'm glad you can use this as a resource. That makes me feel good. Thanks!

This is the second time I have come back to this hub and used it as a resource. It's an excellent explanation. One question--is it too redundant if the RSS feed features the same two hubs that are featured at the bottom of the hubs due to what "Group" they are in? Not sure how to get around this.

Hi, Carol. Let's see what this dummy can answer. LOL. Sure you can add links, but using an RSS feed is different because it will update the links automatically when you write a new hub in that category. So the material is always fresh and up to date. And yes, you can put RSS feeds on your blog or other places, but I haven't tried that yet, so I can't give you specific instructions. You might just play around with the feed link on your profile or look for another hub on the topic. Sorry I couldn't answer more completely about that.

Does that help at all? :-)

Hi Victoria Lynn: I just read this hub and I have a few questions...and maybe some I don't know how to ask....First of all how is this different if I just add links of my own. How do I change the the hubs. Can I put this rss icon on my blog or anywhere else? I am still a bit confused. I followed your formula and got the right url. It took me a while but I did get that. I hope my questions are not too dumb. I will read once more. Thanks so much for patience ...

Faith Reaper--There might be an easier way than what I know, but here's what I know: That happened to me, too, so I went back to my tags and deleted the tag that put that hub in that certain croup. Victoria, I have just one more question - if the hub you are wanting to place RSS feeds on, keeps popping up no matter what you pick, i.e., best, latest, etc., is there a way to delete just that one hub, as you wouldn't want it to be posted on the hub you are posting the feeds on? I figured out how to narrow it down, but if it pops up as the first one on the list, I cannot figure out how to remove it from the list. Thanks a lot for the info. In His Love, Faith Reaper

Faith Reaper--I would do the author just how it was in the example I gave, and see if that works. Whatever topic you use will pull together hubs that are tagged with that. So if you have hubs on "faith" for instance, go through and make sure you have "faith" in all the tags in edit mode. Make sense? I know this can be confusing.

Do you have to have author/Faith-+Reaper or just your name without doing the author/? I am sorry! Also, is the topic, i.e., shopping, does it have to been where your hubs are placed under favorite topics? Duh. I will keep at it, and maybe there is a hub for extra dummies. Thanks for a great hub. I think I definitely qualify as a “RSS feed Dummy”. Hopefully I’ll do better now that I’ve read this hub. Voted up and shared!

Thanks for this hub. I was totally clueless about RSS feeds. I feel that I was missing a way to generate traffic and want to edit all of my hubs. Thanks for teaching me something new today.

SPK5367--It took me a long time and a lot of reading to understand RSS feeds. So, yeah, bookmark this for later when you're ready to take them on! Thanks for reading!

RTalloni--I appreciate your feedback so much! It's helpful to know what part of the hub is helpful, like the playing around with the settings. I was excited to learn how to do this. I hope you will be, too. Thanks so much for reading and for the thoughtful comments!

Now, instead of "What is that?" going off in my head like a neon sign every time I see the RSS option, I'm going to be thinking, "Thank you Victoria Lynn!"

Your description of all the cumulative reading from different perspectives adding up to eventually help the clueless is so true. Your work here has made it click for me. I'll be getting busy trying your instructions out very soon. Thanks, thanks!

Thanks, too, for adding that you play around with the RSS settings--I would have wondered if I should!

vespawoolf--Yes, do try the RSS feeds. I think it is a feature that adds a lot to a hub. Good luck!

After reading your article, I feel like somewhat less of an idiot! I've been afraid to use RSS feeds before, but now I have the confidence to try it. I've bookmarked this and shared it, as well. Thank you!

HI, rajan! So glad you figured out the RSS capsule. I usually include 3 in the capsule. If it's a longer hub, I might do 4 or 5 if they would be really helpful ones. On shorter hubs, I don't put as many. I don't want to overwhelm the reader, but sometimes more might be appropriate if it's a topic that a lot of people are interested in. They might want to see a lot of the related hubs and have some to choose from. Good luck!

Victoria, thanks to you, I managed to add the RSS capsule in my latest hub. Will be adding to older hubs as well.

Just want to ask you how many hubs would be ideal to include in the RSS capsule?

      Thanks again.

I've used RSS feeds on blogs but hadn't got round to tackling how to do it here yet, so thank you for this clear explanation - I will be back in a few weeks when I am on holiday to RSS feed up all my hubs! :)
