HubPages helps pay the bills

Updated on September 6, 2015

Money is what I came here for

In the beginning, which is now over two years back, I came to hubpages in the hope of making money here. I had been searching on the Internet for ways of making money online and came upon a recommendation for this site.

I thought I would check it out and give it a go to see if I could make money by writing articles. I liked the ease of posting hubs here and also many features the site offers.

I enjoyed the community spirit here at hubpages too, and soon was making friends and also reading some excellent articles by other hubbers. I decided that I really liked hubpages and would become a regular user of the website.

Making money at Hubpages

Time went on and months flew by, and although I had added Amazon and eBay as affiliates that could potentially generate money from ads I was running, and although I had signed up with Google Adsense, I still found that I wasn't earning very much at all.

I read in the forums tips for making money at hubpages from more experienced hubbers. I read that you need to give it time here and also that you need to promote your hubs elsewhere, in fact in as many places as you can.

I began posting links to my hubs on my Facebook site, on Twitter, on blogger and on other social-networking websites, as well as on forums and saw the traffic increase immediately. Earnings were still not really happening though, but hubbers told me that it all takes time here. Patience is a virtue I am blessed with.

Fortunately, I had become addicted to hubpages and had praised the site so much that several friends, including CJ Stone and Mistyhorizon2003, had also joined and I was sticking around and posting hubs anyway whether I was earning money or not.

I saw hubpages as an excellent place to showcase my writings and to write about whatever I wanted. As a journalist I already had many articles that had been previously published in newspapers and magazines but had not been published on the Internet, so I decided to publish them as hubs too, as well as new original writings.

After a year, I finally got my first payment from Google. It wasn't a lot by many people's standards but it was exciting and proved that all the hubbers, who had said you need to persevere and that it can take as long as a year before you get results were right.

It gave me an incentive to look at this place again as a site to make money on, and not just a place to enjoy and to post my writings on. It had given me evidence of the reason I had originally come here as being valid. You really can earn money at hubpages and I had done so.

Tips to improve your money-making potential

Marisa Wright was the most helpful hubber to me in pointing out what I need to do to help improve the potential money-making power of my hubs. She even wrote an entire hub about it which I have included a link to below.

I have always prided myself on being a knowledgeable and talented writer, and the feedback I get supports this idea, but what Marisa pointed out to me was that it wasn't my writing or even my subject matter that was at fault but my layout.

Marisa explained that putting photos and videos at the beginning of a hub is a very bad move because that is a prime site for advertising. I had been wrongly thinking that a video or a photo looked good there, and so it does, but it does not help you make money.

Unfortunately I realised that nearly all of my hubs had videos to start and photos alongside what was often only one text box. Marisa explained that you should have more that one text box to increase the adverts being placed at the top of the page.

She also explained that having links to outside sites all through the text was not a good idea because people can click on them and leave your hub and maybe not come back. I hadn't thought of it that way but again could see the sense in what she was telling me.

Bearing all these tips in mind I began going through my hubs making changes for the better. I always remember Marisa's advice now when I put a hub together.

Misha told me my hubs needed Search Engine Optimization or SEO as it is commonly known. He also suggested that I would possibly stand to earn more from more popular subjects about stuff people want to buy than writing about some conspiracy theory or rare plant. I now try to do a far greater mixture of subjects for my hubs because it seems a logical move if I want to make money with my writings.

Sufidreamer encouraged me by telling me that he makes a living as an online freelancer and thought I could do so too. He knew that I needed to find a way to make more money and was doing what he could to raise my hopes about doing so.

Various other very successful hubbers here have inspired me in various ways by seeing what they have achieved in making money and in their popularity. In the list of links below I have included a few of the people who have directly or indirectly motivated me to keep on trying at improving my earning potential here.

Every time I read of fellow hubbers' achievements or I see hubbers who are able to maintain a score of 100 it inspires me to carry on with my efforts at making money at hubpages.

I found that entering hub challenges is well worth doing too to see both your score and traffic go up. I have completed the 30 hubs in 30 days hub challenge twice now.

I have just joined the Seekyt site too, as recommended by howtoguru, where I have been writing and submitting trailer feeds for links to my hubs.

I have a long way to go to become a high earner here but am on the way and I now often get around €100 payment from Google and have had over €50 from eBay. Obviously I can't live on these sums but they really do help to pay my bills and the only way is up.

Really excellent Hub Steve, and thanks for the link to my profile too. I am at the stage of a payout every second month right now and by my reckoning I have been on Hubpages 2 years and 4 months, but I don't write constantly as you know, (summer I am vegetable growing and that takes up most of my time). Happily hubpages is a great place to be and I am content plodding along and hoping my payouts creep up bit by bit. Thanks for the tip on the "hub-trails" too, I didn't know about this and have hubs that would probably be suitable I am guessing.

Glad you stuck around. One thing few people don't know is traffic peaks on average to a hub nearly three years after it's been published, so you should continue to see earnings grow faster now as you add new Hubs. The next 100 comes much more quickly:)

      Thanks for sharing.

Cindy, yes, I am sure you have hubs that would fit the hub-trail project. If they are related specifically to places and of interest to travellers they would but have a look at the details. I have put my Wales and a lot of Tenerife ones in it.

Thank you for the advice, Paul!

Thanks for the tips. I get next to nothing from hubpages but have not researched the subject at all. I have heard of posting on other sites and putting a link back to hubpages but have not tried it yet. I have not heard of trailing before so thanks for that also. I especially like the idea of adding a second text. That makes good sense and is easy to do. I like that better than eliminating pictures. I will compromise between the two. Great hub and thnanks for the links to additional info.

    • Bard of Ely profile image
      Author

Steve Andrews 6 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal

The idea is to produce a layout that maximises adverts at the top of the page rather than down the bottom so two or three or more text boxes can be used. Photos can be made a quarter of the size and the slideshow option so viewers can see them as they should be can be used. The more sites you post your hub links on the more people are likely to see them. Good luck and thanks for posting!

Including a news module is helpful too.

Don't expect massive results quickly. It all takes time on here and you have to work at it! Remember that it doesn't matter how brilliant a hub is if no one sees it so you need traffic!

    • Wrath Warbone profile image

Terry Chestnutt 6 years ago from Cleveland, Ohio

I also think posting at other blog sites and putting a link to your hubs is an effective policy, as you say. Maybe an affordable article submitting service would be easy and effective. SEO with long tail key words that get, I think it is between 5,000 and 14,000 searches a day,so you rank high on the page because there is less competition, is possibly effective. I've been meaning to do all these things but I am elderly and tire easily. Crumby excuse, right? lol

I'm glad that you are doing better. Once I learned about backlinks I started getting more views, and earning more money. I don't bother with twitter or facebook since those readers seem to be more interested in the social scene than in buying anything. My favorite for backlinks is Xomba and their share of Adsense is generous.

      hiu bard, thanjs for sharing.

my thoughts on reading this is that it is both a story of triumph, and sincere congratulations on what you've achieved, and a bit of a sad story too. So much effort and time for comparatively little reward. There's gotta be a better way one is tempted to think, because apparently the writers poring in their time and their souls, aren't making very much.

      Hi Bard of Ely

I have read a few of your hubs and really like the way you write, I haven't earned any money here yet, I am a relatively new member, but, as you stated patience is indeed a virtue' and I have now also become addicted to the hubpages format and community, money will be a bonus. Your advise here is appreciated. Thankyou

Well, I don't know what you are on about there, SeanorJohn, because I have never said anything about wanting to go back to Wales so not sure where you got that impression, but thank you for posting!

I suspect seanorjohn means when you had that period of not enough money to keep you in Tenerife for more than another couple of months, and not sufficient income from outside writing work. It was when you were also worried that if this meant you had to leave Tenerife what would happen to "Tiggy" as she wouldn't have a pet passport and would have had to go into quarantine if you took her with you.

    • seanorjohn profile image

      seanorjohn 6 years ago

Yes, that's what I was recalling. you got me worried there Bard. I am increasingly questioning my powers of recall.

    • Bard of Ely profile image
      Author

Steve Andrews 6 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal

Thanks for explaining, Cindy! My apologies to seanorjohn for not understanding! I never had any intention of leaving so that is why I hadn't realised that others might have got that impression. Having said that my life is incredibly complex and I have family ties and many of my best friends in the UK so feel a lot like the situation described in Neil Diamond's I Am I Said, which I have rewritten to change "LA's fine but it ain't home" to Tenerife's fine... and instead of "I'm New York city born and raised" I sing I'm Cardiff City...

And I had a wonderful offer to go and live and work in Dubai earlier this year which I turned down but it's there as another pull on me and possibility!

Hey Steve - Congrats on the high score. I must say, don't be afraid of writing about niches - the highest hubpage I've had is mine on the US farm bill. Right now at Squidoo (where I usually write, but I'm looking to return to Hubpages) my highest ranked page is Ursula the Sea Witch (from Disney's Little Mermaid). I hope its not blasphemy to link to Squidoo from here (I know lots of people active at both sites), but here is my affiliate marketing history page https://hubpages.com/business/affiliate-mom .

Actually one thing I have found from selling my art and designs on Zazzle and other POD sites is sometimes subjects which are a little unusual or off beat are paradoxically often more popular than more mainstream subjects. This is mainly because subject matter which is more obscure presents less competition so provides a niche market. OTOH the market for more conventional mainstream subject matter is already well catered for, in which case it can be more difficult to get noticed.

Although art/design and writing are different disciplines I would argue in terms of Internet marketing and search engine optimization similar rules apply because at the end of the day most things are found based on key words.

So I'm not sure I entirely agree with your friend Misha that "writing about some conspiracy theory or rare plant" is a bad idea because it stands to reason it's easier to be a big fish in a small Pond than it is in an Ocean :) That said I think there are advantages in creating a broad mix of things because whilst people may find one's work through a more obscure avenue they may actually buy something which is more conventional, so the more variety one has the better :)

Hey Bard... that was a really nice encouraging hub for all us newbies. I've been on for about a month writing like a lunatic, but I haven't really been too careful about format or SEO or even topics. Just lovely to write so much. However I think it's time I started to heed some of this good advice. Great links on here too. Good stuff!

    • Bard of Ely profile image
      Author

Steve Andrews 6 years ago from Lisbon, Portugal

      Thank you, Louisxfourie and Tom!

Tom, it is really important to pay attention to this other stuff because good writing is not enough. As my good friend CJ Stone who is a professional writer and author recently posted on a hub of his own it took him 2 years to get his first cheque from Google and yet he gets loads of great comments here and off line he has books out and has written for well known newspapers and magazines. In other words his writing is top quality but he hasn't spent time on all the other stuff the top earners here use. Until Marisa Wright told me the tip about not putting videos and pictures to start a hub I had all of mine laid out badly. The reason some people make money here and others don't is because some know how to do these things and spend time on layout, SEO, back linking etc and the others don't.

You've got the right attitude about it to make make money and have fun and did a great job explaining this for people. It takes awhile to find the balance. To much emphasis on money and you might not have any fun and just get burnt out. Too much emphasis just on having fun and you won't end up making any money. Once you find that balance though, it feels really good. Especially when you get those checks that pay your electricity, gas and phone bills :-)

      Good hub, Bard.

I am glad to hear that things are improving for you in the area of earnings.

I agree about the advice not to include links in the body of your article. I usually follow this recommendation, but sometimes I deviate from it. I have a recent article that I feel is necessary to include outside links. However, I didn't insert them in the first third of the article. This gives a view "above the fold" of only text, plus Adsense ads. I think it could be a good strategy to use once in a while on an experimental hub -- meaning one which is destined to have short-term interest. The exposure is good, if nothing else.

I wish there were a magic formula to increase traffic and clicks, but I know better.

Good luck and continuing success here.

I have been looking for any information on the amount of traffic. I am curious to know how many hubs you had when you got your first check? I am wondering how much I will have to write to make money. I also want to know if you remember how many clicks you received during the beginning.

It must have been over 100 hubs but no idea about number of clicks!

      Hiya Bard

Now following you because, as a newbie, I can actually understand what you are talking about. I particularly enjoyed 'Hubpages pays the bills' as it stated in simple terms what to do to make money on Hubpages - eventually. And much as I love writing I need to make money too, so I'm in it for the long haul.

      Lechid da!

Some people have called hub pages a 'write for free' website since they were frustrated that they didn't really make any money with it.

its not true, such people are just judging by their own experience.

Thanks, Bard of Ely!!!My father has the name Ely. Glad you pointed out about 'links'. I might as well refrain from using such tool in order to focus more on my writing.

      Hello Bard:

Really enjoyed your hub in reference to earnings on hubpages. A lot of great information. I know that I myself, being here just five months now, have not made a ton of money either. But know that patience is real important when writing for this site. And eventually the money will flow. But more importantly is, that if you really enjoy writing like I do and know that you certainly do. Than this is the place for us and fellow hubbers alike, regardless of what we are currently earning. The sky is the limit as you also mentioned. Again thanks for sharing this great article with all of us that I voted very useful and found interesting tips within as well.

This is a very good hub. I see "lots" of shitty comments form persons who've joined and produced something or another, and then quickly got disappointed.

I suppose such persons have no real idea what the word "work" means.

The thing about the layout - it's mind blowing, isn't it? I'd have never known about it without someone telling me either. I could have lived a thousand years before realizing that pictures or videos do NOT go at the top right of the text that should be the first capsule.

My newest idea for increasing earnings here is that I should increase my "authority" in the niche topics that I write about. I've really already got too many niche topics or subjects going, but I'm going to concentrate on the topics that I seem to best score with so far as Google traffic.

I've never seen my author score be as high as yours always is. I got to 97 for about half a day once. I just can't seem to commit myself to . . . well, anything really.

Best of luck to us all.

Hello Wesman! I often think it really does come down to how much work you put in and a lot of people expect too much for nothing! Thank you for your comments!

You are very welcome, Sir. I must compliment you one your ability to be very interesting. I still really like the video with the "space ship" that you published a month or so ago.

That was pretty creative - I get tired really quickly. . . .of being able to predict what someone will say or do.

      Cheers for your day!

Hi Bard, It has been a long time since reading one of your articles. Your hub on how HP helps pay the bills is an excellent article. I for one, is thankful for HP, and so glad I have stuck around here, and learned how to earn on HP, and still learning how to build my earning.

I have not heard of Seekyt, and on my way to checking out this site to see how I can build more traffic to my hubs from using this social networking site. Thanks for the info! Voted up!!

Thanks, Adrienne! I don't bother with Seekyt now as it changed...not sure what it's like now. This hub is old and reflected what I was doing then.
