Pin this! Best Nights to Use Pinterest

Updated on April 7, 2012

My Experience with Pinterest & Other Social Networks

Ok, first off let me start by saying that I have no proven statistical data to back up my claims, but my observations do come from a background of over 10 years as a web professional, mostly in design and development and 6 consecutive weeks as a blogger on HubPages.

I've also dabbled a bit in social media. As a (tech-savvy) woman in her early thirties, social networking still kinda freaks me out. It can feel so invasive. Yet, it's super convenient and you can stay in touch with so many more people. Here's what I have used:

Facebook is probably my most personal account because of the privacy settings, mainly I use it for keeping in touch with close friends, family, & colleagues.

What is a Hashtag?

For those who are unaware, a hashtag is when you add the # symbol in front of a word or short phrase, #likethis or #this #instagramtips.

If you love photography and you have an iPhone, you have to check out Instagram.

Instagram Tip
Don't forget to use hashtags when posting pictures with keyword descriptions of your photos so you can search for people sharing images with similar interests.

♥ Social Media Emoticons ☺

I can never remember which social networks will accept code or the keyboard shortcuts to make hearts and smiley faces in my status updates, so I always have to search, copy & paste. Now, I know where to find them: ♥ ☺

I've got a love/hate thing going on with twitter. Twitter is typing or texting a thought, question, statement, idea, etc in 140 characters or less to our virtual world.

You can follow others to see what they have to say at any given moment, it's real-time and has become a source of breaking news in recent years. But, it moves fast and I never really have time for it. I mostly enjoy it while watching t.v. #community #parksandrec #theoffice

Pinterest: Time of Day Poll

When do you most often explore pinterest?

See results

Pinterest Paradise

Oh right, exactly why I started this hub. Pinterest is by far my favorite social network at the moment. Especially on an iPad. Give me a Tuesday night while my husband is at woodworking class, my kids are in bed, a glass of wine, my feet up and I am in Pinterest Paradise.

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is a visual based social network. It's kind of like visiting a museum. You can explore rooms (boards) to your favorite galleries (categories), glance at a description or two, and you often have the option to follow the picture to a blog, online store, or photo gallery for more information.

Using Pinterest

'like', 'repin', 'comment'

Tap the 'like' button and store the photo for your own reference at a later date, leave a comment for the person that originally shared the pin, or repin the image to one of your own boards.

Creating Boards on Pinterest, a Few Random Ideas:

  • Getting married?
Create a my wedding board and scour the internet for your dream wedding colors, flowers, & dress ideas.

  • Buying a House?
Build a home decor board filled with tips on budget decorating, practical storage, wall colors, and amazing furniture.

  • Crafty?
Check out the DIY+crafts category for a dose of instant inspiration.

Why I Like Pinterest

For me, pinterest is the most fun social network to interact with. I am a creative person, I am energenized by artistry, and I am easily motivated to create handmade and homemade objects or take on 'do it yourself' projects.

Pinterest: Day of the Week Poll

If you pin your hubs, what day have you seen the best immediate results?

See results

I joined Pinterest a few months ago and HubPages 6 weeks ago. I started pinning some of my vegetarian recipes to a 'my favorite vegetarian recipes' board on pinterest. Many of which, have been repinned multiple times. I have gained followers and have begun to see a sustained flow of traffic from my hubs that have been pinned.

My top three evenings for pinning on pinterest have been:

  1. Tuesday
  2. Wednesday
  3. Sunday

What Are Your Thoughts on Pinterest?

So, I made you read a lot to get my advice on the best nights to use pinterest, based on a short lived experience, but I'd like to know what others have experienced to see whether or not there is something to my theory. I will also plan to keep this hub updated with my observations and findings.

veggie-mon, thanks for that. I suppose that moderation is the keyword and not to be too blatant about self-promotion. I'll have a go and see how it works out. Cheers.

Hi Fred, it took me a couple of weeks, I think, for my invite to be accepted. You are absolutely right about the Pinterest community and self-promotion. I do my best to create a balance between the amount of pins I create to promote my own hubs, as well as, pinning and repinning from other online sources of people sharing ideas with similar interests to my own.

Hi Kelley, me too! I definitely feel like evenings are more active on Pinterest or at least that is when I see the most immediate return (repins & likes) on my pins. Overall, I think the most important quality of a pin is an eye-catching image. I'm glad you found the hub useful, thanks for reading!

At TheInspired Life, I guess it depends on what you write. Your right that Pinterest is a place for visual inspiration and the hubs I have shared on the site have been vegetarian recipes, cooking with kids, and crafts. All of which have a lot of my own photos, so I would understand why your husband's woodworking and friends photography business have experienced in increase in traffic to their sites. I see that you have written on a variety of topics on hubpages, I would imagine that your gardening or hiking tips would do well and I have also seen many 'pins' of graphically styled words. So, possibly adding an image to your creative writing tips hub that includes one of the tips as an image, that you could share on Pinterest to a board that included other writing tips as well would attract some followers and as a result more traffic to your hubs. Keep me posted on your experience!

Hi veggie-mom. Only a few days ago I downloaded a couple of reports about Pinterest with a view to exploring its use and found that at the moment it is 'Invite Only'. Did you have any trouble getting accepted? Also, apparently the Pinterest community frown on members pinning stuff for marketing purposes so it really is, at the moment anyway, just a social platform. Is that your experience and what are your views on using it for marketing? I see that HubPages has a Pinterest button at the top of the page so they obviously believe it is worth sharing your hubs.

I love Pinterest. It's so beautiful. I'm not sure yet when most of my things get repinned but I think it's better at night. Thanks for sharing this useful hub!

I love that Pinterest is visual driven, not conversation based. I have found some wonderful recipes, videos and DIY projects on the site.

Crafts, cute babies or animals, and food...that seems to sum up what I see the most of on Pinterest. The site makes me hungry and is probably heaven for chefs or those in any food related business. My husband has done well there with his woodworking projects and I have had some hub traffic coming from there...but I'm not sure what to do with it to really further my writing career. My photographer friend though has gotten quite a bit of traffic to her website, so it works for some businesses.
