Why are hub scores necessary? What do they add to Hubpages? It seems to me that a hub should stand or fail on its merit, and the scores can prejudice a potential reader against a well-written hub with a low score based on unknown criteria.
I never thought of it that way...but I think you're right.
For the most part, I think it's a way to incite the writers to do a better job at creating rich content. That's really all it is.
The hubber score is the same way. Hubpages needs to get people to participate, so they create a "ladder" and point to it and say, "Get on the ladder and work hard to the top of the ladder." And then people do it because that's what they're accustomed to doing.
