Not really but it will help you gain followers to say something about yourself. People will often check you out and it's a chance to sell yourself.
I think a few sentences is enough but more is of course better. Just start writing hubs and you'll gradually attract more traffic to your profile. At some point you do want to say more if you want to establish yourself in the HubPages community.
You can begin hubbing without a single information on your profile page (you don't even have to have an avatar). Nevertheless, having a nicely presented profile page attracts people to read what you have written and this affects your hubscore in a positive manner. Take a look at other people's profiles to get the idea of the best way to introduce yourself.
