I link to & from other websites as much as possible, and make sure to create quality content. (Back links & constant, quality content are SO important.)

& I typically create a twitter & facebook (fan) account for new sites, to attract attention from those following any of my other sites.

I'm not a millionaire (or an expert) from my websites, that's for sure, but I get a decent amount of hits daily. =]

Good Question. I do not have a web site. All I do is write on Hub Pages, but maybe you should examine more closely web sites that do have high volume traffic.

I think it is important that whatever you write, write well. Try to create a product that you would like to read. What is fascinating to people ? I like beautiful pictures of tigers, and horses. Fantastic pictures in Hubs probably help readers to enjoy them more.

Whatever you do in life make it interesting. Whatever subject you write about make it interesting.

As for traffic, you need to learn from the experts. There is a lot to be learned if your seeking high volume traffic. Good computer knowledge helps you to know how to use certain links to other sites.

Ask more questions on the subject, and seek more details, and of course follow all rules.

    God Bless You.

Google Adwords is a great way to get hits on your website.  It can be a bit confusing to use at first but there is great technical support offered free for a limited amount of time.  It does cost to use this service but you set the amounts perclick.  I use it and feel it is a worthwhile service.  You choose your daily budget, what you want your ad to say, and the market you want to reach(based upon your chosen criteria).  So if your website is selling a product, if someone searches a key term that you have chosen, your ad will show when they google using the key terms you have chosen.  You only pay Google when the searcher clicks on your ad. My website has been visited 137 times in the past 30 days from just this service.

Google Adwords can be expensive if you don't know how to user it so be careful. I like to use long tailed keywords and only use exact match, this way you have more control over your traffic and the conversions will be higher. Never use content network unless you have deep pockets. The longer more specific keywords get less traffic but you'll be surprised at the quality of the traffic you get. Remember to send them to the exact page that the keyword phrase describes.
