Why am I only getting a few searches for my hubs? What can I do to improve the situation?

Try Google key word research tool, it will give an estimate amount of search generated on a particular topic on which you are going to write. you can tune your post heading with this tool. and write good summary for your hubs too smile

You can make some changes to your aritcles to improve their search engine visibility -- up to a point.  For example, making your titles more search engine friendly, linking your related articles together, and using several keywords and their synonyms within the text of your articles.  All these things help search engines list your webpage when someone does a Google/Yahoo/Bing search for the topic you're writing about.

But a lot of the site-wide traffic decline has to do with Hubpages itself, and there's not much you or anyone else can do about that.

You might try changing your titles and see if they get more traffic. For instance the septic tank article would probably get a lot more if it was "How to empty septic tank less". Leave the details, such as the use of micro-organisms, for the readers to pick up. Use a title that is more likely to be googled.
I have several articles that are rated high on google, usually just the ones with very simple titles, such as "Skinny Dog Breeds", "Dog Breeds Who Dont Bark, Much". I have an article titled "How to compost dog waste, correctly" and it had almost no traffic. I changed it to "How to compost dog poop", which is googled a lot more frequently, but I still have little traffic, so there are no guarantees out there!
When you change the title, resubmit the URL to webmaster tools. It will speed things up a little.
