If scores are meaningless, what's the point?

Generally speaking, it seems to be the opinion of most people on Hubpages (or at any rate, those who've been writing here for a few months, at least) that hub scores don't really mean anything. People write great hubs that score poorly, or some of their low-scoring hubs are their most popular by far.

So, if the scores don't mean anything, why are they there? (for the record, I don't mind them, I'm just curious)

Basically, they help rank where hubs appear in certain topic areas on the site, plus turn "dofollow" links into "nofollow" links to stop spammers getting free backlinks on low quality content.
