Did you write this?
From family, friends and others I often get "did you write this? As a response to my work. I wonder it is a compliment or not? Usually I say thank you anyway. What does it mean?
I would suspect it's a compliment and an unintentional insult too!
Essentially they're saying it either doesn't sound like you or they can't imagine you writing that well.
I know a few of my family and friends read my stuff because they tell me they enjoy reading my stories and poems. On occasion my kids or grand-kids might comment on something I write, but they aren't much on reading. So if you often get comments at least you know they are interested in your work. Take them all as compliments.
They are either commending you or the either. I would have them elaborate just so you do know what they mean. No sense in going through life guessing.
