For instance, it says they have 50 articles, but then only a few are showing. What is going on with that?
The other articles that are not showing up are not featured. Articles can be unfeatured because of quality issues or because of lack of traffic.
Just to add to what DrMark already said; you can decide whether to show unfeatured articles on your profile, you have that option when you edit your profile.
