Google Truncating Sections of Titles Before Colons

    I changed the title of an article yesterday. The title has a colon in the middle, but I only changed the text before the colon. I got Google to re-crawl the page, but noticed today that in the SERPs, it has truncated the title (which is longer than the max no. of characters it will display) and is displaying text after the colon and not chopping off excess characters at the end as would be expected.
    Is this normal behaviour or something new?

    This is normal, Google shows the reader the part they think is relevant. This is why you should try and keep the entire title length within certain limits.

      This is the first time I've ever seen this happen. Usually the end is truncated, not the beginning. l'm wondering has it something to do with the colon?

        The colon is a  separator and Google probably better understands your title now. The keyword you entered most likely has more to do with the part after the colon.
