When you place quotes in your articles, what words do you use to show the individual quote? For example: "I pour the milk in after the water is simmering," explains Bob Cook.
The word "explains" is used a lot by me. I think, I should try a different word like clarifies, adds, says, said...what are some good action words that you use for adding an individual quote or how do you add quotes to your articles when show who said the quote?

Here is a very helpful guide that I have used for years:

      https://www.gallaudet.edu/tutorial-and- … araphrases

Here are some examples of quotes from a hub that I am now writing:

The average inflation rate was 2.07%. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index, “prices in 2017 were 6.76% higher than prices in 2012. The dollar experienced an average inflation rate of 1.32% per year during this period. In other words, $100 in 2012 is equivalent in purchasing power to $106.76 in 2017, a difference of $6.76 over 5 years.”

In June, planet Earth observed the Transit of Venus, a “rare astronomical event.” NASA.gov tells us that “On June 5, 2012 at sunset on the East Coast of North America and earlier for other parts of the U.S., the planet Venus made its final trek across the face of the sun as seen from Earth until the year 2117.”

Pop-Culture.us remarks that “Apple products accounted for 14% of all theft crimes in New York City in 2012.”

Here are some examples of quotes from an older hub:

Money.CNN.com points out that in October 2008, nearly 85,000 people in the U.S. lost their homes to foreclosure, “adding vacant inventory to an already overburdened market.”

TheBalance.com tells us that “Borrowers got into high-risk mortgages such as option-ARMs, and they qualified for mortgages with little or no documentation. Even people with bad credit could qualify as subprime borrowers.”

Joel Havemann reveals that casualties in the United States included the largest mortgage lender, government-sponsored entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the entire investment banking industry, two of the largest commercial banks, the largest savings and loan, the biggest insurance company, and the auto industry.

(The above example was not a direct quote but a paraphrase.)

I also struggle with that.  I use words like -

says, suggests, notes, observes, explains, states, argues, asserts, argues, claims, thinks, believes

I usually have to keep a list when writing something long with lots of quotes since I end up using just a few over and over instead of varying them.

These are good ones. Yes. It is a struggle. I sometimes think I should read more articles with quotes to see how the other writers do it. Inserting quotes is more of a craft than just plan writing as an expression or art.
