I'm "attempting" to write an educational article for children. As I introduce new keywords, should I highlight them in italics and also possibly make them bold the first time they appear but use non-formatted text for subsequent appearances?
I agree, I think it's fine to use bold font to introduce a new word, then don't do it in later appearances. I've done that and got no complaints.
I'd have to refresh my memory on APA (haven't worked with it since some college papers), but I use a similar pattern when repeatedly name trading cards, though I opt for quotation marks in the initial appearance and no formatting in subsequent. Whether that follows either APA or MLA guidelines I'm not sure, but I find it's both clearest and easiest to read.
As for your case, unless it's an established standard when highlighting new terms for children, I'd use either bold or italics, but not both.

I've come to notice that there is a stark unspoken conflict between authors and editors alike as it concerns the use of single quotes in place of regular quotations. In writing, how do you punctuate thoughts?Should the "narrator" put their character's thoughts in quotation marks similar to dialogue or leave it out? Just wondering what is the proper use of punctuation for writing out thoughts.
