I just sent this off to "Team HubPages in an email. What do you think?

Good job breaking up the vertical sites to be more specific. I think it will work.

I have an idea for writers to run by you. I have always been a fan of challenges among the writers here. Sometimes, the HP team steps in with a challenge for the entire site. Great, love it. When we, the writers offer a challenge, it goes only as far as our reach into the community. For me, because I've taken numerous breaks to participate in some very time-consuming competitions, I've been dropped by my followers or they just think I've gone away.

So, how to have more participation in challenges, is the question. Why more challenges? For one, it makes the site more fun for writers. If writers enjoy the social aspect of the site, they will be more likely to write hubs. That is my opinion. The more participants in a particular challenge, the more quality hubs are written for the challenge.

When I talk about challenges, it might seem I am talking only about fiction since that is my focus. But I've also written some quite persuasive and relevant nonfiction. I believe we need more challenges among all the writers. And I believe those challenges should all be presented in a way that gives them an equal opportunity for success.

So I am suggesting a tool which is accessible by all HP writers for the purpose of announcing a writers' challenge. It might be a fiction challenge with three prompts. It might be a nonfiction challenge in which writers are challenged to produce hubs that answer the question, "What are the consequences of a universe expanding at beyond the speed of light."

If these challenges go network-wide, there will be some amazing and awesome responses.

I think this would especially be helpful for the site as a whole regarding nonfiction. Think of the prompt I suggested about the expanding universe. Look it up on Google Keyword. That is the ocean you would tap into with several new, quality articles on the subject.

The community of HP is organic, alive, and it wants to act like it is alive. Give it some freedom.

One last thing, give us back a way to appreciate each other without leaving a comment. The Equivalent of a "like" button would do it. You might see this strictly as a writers site, but many of the writers see it as a social site as well.
The sooner you get on board with us on that point, the sooner you will see a more productive HubPages.

Yep Chris, it was once fun and lucrative to have challenges here. Good idea but it seems HP is less and less interested in community related functions. You meet lots of talented writers and newcomers can exhibit their skills as well.

      Good luck!

Hi Randy, The initial audience for any hub is other hubbers. Why not capitalize on that fact rather than ignore or fight it? Challenges that float down from "above" are only more successful in terms of numbers of participants because they reach the entire community. I'm asking HP to give all challenges the same chance.

Well thought out, well presented idea Chris. Hope it flies!

What a wonderful idea, Chris. I love participating in writing challenges, and it helps to provide inspiration when it is lacking. Mos, however, are issued by other writers here and, as you say, only taken up by their followers so is limited. If the management would issue broad spectrum challenges it would generate a lot of additional hubs.
