Google Stops Blog Comments, Hubpages Spam Comments Increases

    On January 11th 2019 this happened:

    "Effective today, we're closing the commenting feature on the Google Webmaster Central blog. Instead of reading the comments here on the blog, we're going to focus on interacting with the community on our other channels. For all of our subsequent posts, if you have comments, feedback, or funny stories, you can find us in our help forums or on Twitter."

    Leaving comments on the Google Webmaster blog was nofollow, but that didn't stop rule breakers from leaving links in their comments to try to get traffic.

    What I noticed on Hubpages:

    Since that change I have had a TON of new comments where users are trying to leave links. Sure the comment is nice, and without the link would be fine. But I see a correlation between Google's move and increased user generated spam comments.

    The only thing we can do is delete these comments. Are you guys seeing an increase in user generated spam comments since January 11th?

    No. The only commenters who try to leave links on my articles are spammers. Most of them are automatically consigned to spam. Every couple of days I nuke them. Not getting any more than usual.

      Maybe it's just one guy targeting my articles for some reason. I don't know. They all get deleted so I figure it will stop. I usually get my real comments over the spring and summer. I'm not used to this number of spam comments.
