Photo at top of article good for mobile users?

   I have always been accustomed to putting a photo at the top of my articles. I think this worked well when most users were using a computer, but now that most are using their phones, would it be better to have the photo further down the page. If I look at it in mobile view, it shows my photo, then an ad, and only then does the article begin. It seems like all that scrolling just to get to the article might put people off. What do you think?

      I think you are correct. On the articles I have been publishing the last year or so I have been pushing a text capsule to the very top. I use it to offer the reader a breif introduction that I hope will ecourage him or her to read further.
      I then add the photo. Maven adds the ad. And it is only then that they scroll down and find the answer they are looking for.
      (I try to edit and update all of my articles every year. As I am editing, I am adding this small text capsule above the top photo. I have no idea if this is a great boon for traffic but I do think it helps the readers.)

         It seems like maybe the editors or bots or whatever, don't agree. I moved a paragraph above the photo on a couple of my hubs, and they moved the picture back to the top.

            I took up your suggestion and I've tried this on about 20 hubs, but the editors didn't move the photo back up.

   I size my images for promotion as well as article appearance. I put a narrower photo at the top of the page as this is what looks good on Facebook and what they pick up. The second image I put in is one sized for Pinterest as the Pinterest browser button will pick it up there but not if it is lower in the article.

      I agree that works well for promotion, but don't you think it's important to give the user a good experience? It doesn't do much good to have thousands of people coming to your page if they immediately click away.

   Editors differ though. On Dengarden something I added was stripped from all articles because the senior editor considered it spammy. On Owlcation, the same thing was allowed to remain on several articles even though these articles have been checked multiple times because I change popular hubs maybe once a week.
