"There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self."

A good one.. Being a better person than you once were is great --though I believe no one is better,in the opinion of the universe, than an innocent newborn babe.
I would have added there is nothing noble in believing you are superior to anyone.

I agree and thought about it when I posted the quote. However, there is a definition of "man," which means everyone. In general, using the word "man" connotates a negative inclination. It is best to say, "anyone." I couldn't change Hemingway's words.

This is an inspiring quote. I like Rochelle's addition as well.

He was one of my favorite authors when I was much younger. I'm not saying he's no longer one of my favorites, but I've read all his major novels a few times by now, and loads of his short stories. And you know, he's not producing new ones.

You know when he shot himself people said it was because drinking had damaged his brain, and caused him to become paranoid. In more recent years it has been proven he was absolutely right, the FBI or the CIA, or both, were following him everywhere he went. Basically, they harassed him.

If you ever want to read a funny thing, read about the one time Hemingway met John Steinbeck. That did not go over well at all.

I am not familiar with Hemingway and Steinbeck's meeting, though I can only imagine what that entailed.
About being investigated by the FBI and CIA, the Freedom of Information Act enabled researches to discover he was being watched by these groups.
Sadly, Ernest Hemingway was incarcerated in a psychiatric institution and given 20 electroshocks, subsequently committing suicide. He stated: “What these shock doctors don’t know is about writers…what is the sense of ruining my head and erasing my memory, which is my capital, and putting me out of business? It was a brilliant cure but we lost the patient…."

A student of Berkeley Psychic Institute once explained to me what electroshock therapy does--it breaks, fragments memory pictures. She went on to explain that we need pictures to learn. These fragmented pictures can be reconstructed. A better approach to dealing with negative pictures one has become stuck on is to use the imagery of violet and the waltz in music.

I don't blame Hemingway for his perspective about the treatment. He had it right.

I am glad you like the quote. Hemingway is one of my favorites, too.
