“Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves.”
― D.H. Lawrence
There is some truth to this. However, slavery, from my perspective, is a feeling of spirit. One can be a happy "slave," or be a disgruntled "free man." I'm not sure "hard knocks" ever solves or "wins" anything except more hard knocks--and this is not to downplay the purpose of military, but patient diplomacy is the higher road.
