    Hi Guys,

    Let me see who can help with this one. I am using a line from a popular poem. The initial line and a second line of my own. However, sources seem conflicting as to who wrote it. I see both Sir Edmund Spenser and Gammer Gurton's Garland. Any suggestions? I looked at 973thedawg.com. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Not sure how this relates to grammar so you're probably attracting the wrong people to answer. Also, how can anyone give insight when you haven't posted the line?

      Thinking about it, it is so old that it might not matter. "Roses are red, Violets are blue", but I wasn't sure the line really mattered. In general, if different sources identify two different authors I don't know what would be correct.

    I get that this question is no longer important to you, but I found it interesting and did a bit of poking around. Back in those days plagiarism and borrowing tidbits of previously written items, was no big thing and was rather common. Hence that it appears that the phrase you refer to was potentially inspired by a writing by Edmund Spenser, as you've already surmised:

    "It was upon a Sommers shynie day,
    When Titan faire his beames did display,
    In a fresh fountaine, farre from all mens vew,
    She bath'd her brest, the boyling heat t'allay;
    She bath'd with roses red, and violets blew,
    And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forrest grew.[2],

    Yet the truer statement would be that the actual phrase you refer to is closer to the one by Joseph Ritson--from Gammer Gurton's Garland. One may have inspired the other, even if only vaguely.

      Those are exactly the two I was deliberating between. Thanks for taking the time.

        Oh yeah, I totally got that... I was agreeing with you, but offering my reasoning why.
