De-Thumbnailing Images

Is there any way of doing this? Editors insist on thumbnailing all the images I upload. Apart from the issues with ad placement between image and captions, there's also the problem with no zoom facility and resolution being drastically reduced. Looks like I'm going to have to upload loads of images again.

It's becoming apparent that Maven prefers text only articles so they have plenty of room to place the invasive/interruptive ads.

They've thumbnailed the step-by-step images I take and post in my recipe articles. That's very annoying and doesn't give the reader a true picture of what each step should look like. I've looked at other DIY and cooking articles all over the Internet. They don't thumbnail the photos. What sense does it make to group them all together in a format you can barely see?

I'm starting to de-thumbnail (or is it un-thumbnail?) all my images. It might mean extra scrolling for readers, but at least they can see images clearly. Unzoomable thumbnails are only a small proportion of the width of the screen (just over 1/4).

I'd like to do that, too, Eugene. Do the articles go thru QAP again once you make changes? And do they remain on the niche site(s)?

They will go through the QAP again if edited. They should remain on the niche sites as it takes a pretty drastic change to get them moved off the niches.

You could try sending an e-mail to staff prior or right after editing explaning why you are changing the photos back to how you originally had them. Usually they will keep them if you explain why you are changing it, otherwise you could risk them simply putting them back into thumbnails.

I have not noticed this, but I will be going through some of my recipe articles just to be sure. I don't generally use thumbnails for the same reasons you and Eugene listed. Especially for the topics we write about it is better to be able to see the full image in the paragraph that it goes to.

Yes, any changes you make result in a check. There normally isn't an issue. The only time I got my knuckles rapped was when I put back in an Amazon capsule that had been removed and I was told to remove it or the article would be moved back to HP. I might run into problems with thumbnails though because I took out 4 sets from one article. Thumbnails make for a bad reader experience because of the lack of an ability to zoom and ads stuffed into them. Even if images were the same width as text, it would help, but they're only half the size of paragraph width.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Eugene.

If you have a lot of consecutive images in an article, it might be a good idea to compress them and re-upload. There's a noticeable delay when scrolling as blank space appears in the space reserved for an image, then the image appears. It's only about 1/4 second on a fast connection, but on slower connections it would be more noticeable. Also images on the Maven version site are displayed 1.2 times wider, so I think that means they are 1.2 x 1.2 times or 1.4 times more sizeable as regards data size, so take longer to be downloaded and rendered on screen.
