I'm a bit troubled.  I just published a "new" poem.  It's actually from 1996.  THAT is the date I wrote it, and therefore my original copyright date.

I made a teeny tiny revision (punctuation) before publishing it today.  It is the same poem.

However, we are not allowed to put a copyright notice of our own on our articles...we can only click on the option to publish a HP-generated copyright date, which in this case is obviously 2021.  That's a 25-year gap from my original creation of the poem.

I resent that I cannot so indicate anywhere that this poem is my original work and was copyright by virtue of its creation and placement of pen to paper way back in 1996.

You can just mention these facts as a footnote in the poem, or as an introductory prologue.

Yes, I've done that with poems I originally wrote long before publishing on the Internet.

I see you did just that, Liz. That's the only way you can let people know how long you've been holding the copyright, unfortunately.

Actually, I don't believe putting pen to paper automatically generates a copyright.

But either way, HP cannot simply allow us to put any date we wish; when someone comes knocking with a DMCA on us we must be able to prove that date, which HP does.

Actually, putting pen to paper does create a literary copyright:

Yes, it does. But the problem with copyright is generally *proving* ownership.

Plagiarism is also not usually an issue when something hasn't been published and put into the public domain.

The HP copyright notice is really just a warning to put people off copying, I believe. Legally, you own the writing regardless.

I guess I'm not entirely sure what your problem is DzyMsLizzy? It seems pedantic to change the HP date when your work wasn't in the public domain?

Just wanting to put the original date from when the work was originally penned, that's all.

I think it is simply good practice to have the earliest relevant date for copyright, or someone who copies the content might be seen as the original and get your version taken down.  I would agree with adding your own copyright statement to cover this which states the year the work was actually first written
