Should We Delete All Social Media Shares of Articles?

    Maybe Google is penalising us for sharing too much on various platforms.

    I doubt it. I don't think Google takes social media sharing all that seriously and is more likely to ignore rather than penalize oversharing.

    It's noticeable that HP has changed which social media options to put on our pages for sharing over the years. Nowadays, it's Pinterest and Facebook. I guess links from these two are most helpful for hubbers and other social media is less useful.

    I'm guessing it's the links from Pinterest and Facebook that have some use algorithmically, but I don't know with any surety.

    I don't think it was ever the case that you could beat the system by sharing prolifically. I don't think Google ever took it super-seriously in algorithm terms. So, from their perspective, there wasn't a problem to fix.

    Of course, you can generate traffic directly sometimes with Twitter or Reddit or whatever, but that's different from influencing the algorithm in a significant way.

    Yost seems to think external and internal links are important for SEO. If you are working in WordPress their SEO tool grades your titles, readability as well as the number of internal and external links. Apparently those are the most important SEO attributes within your control.

      Links have always been important for SEO, but not all links matter as far as Google goes, and some matter more than others.
