Creative Writing Tips, What are Your Thoughts on My Short Story?

   I have written for pages for more than 12 years now. The majority of my articles are non-fiction essays and research papers. I also have several persuasive opinion pieces as well. However, I've always been interested in creative writing and have written many short stories since my youth. I recently posted my first creative writing piece which is a short story here:

   I was hoping I could get some feedback from the community on my short story to see if I'm headed in the right direction for future creative writing efforts on HubPages. Specifically, I'm interested to hear your take on the following items:
   
   Length: This story is a little over a thousand words long. I am guessing that it's probably too short for a short story but I don't know what is normal for this type of writing.
   
   Detail: What is your opinion on the level of detail and descriptions of the scenery, emotions, and action in the story? Too descriptive? Not enough? What about the pace of action?
   
   Style/Genre: For this story, I chose to write a mystery/horror piece. What are your thoughts on this? I have already written several sci-fi stories (and may post them here someday) however my son tells me horror/mystery is way more popular.
   
   Images: What are your thoughts on the images used? I felt like an AI-generated image for the cover would be an appropriate choice as it can convey the theme of the story better than any image I could find or draw myself. Also, I had an idea of creating character cards to help with the character development. They were fun to create but they were a lot of work so I am not sure I will do this for other stories unless I decide to reuse the characters.
   
   Feel free to post some links to some of your stories; I'd be happy to check them out and see what short stories have had success with readership. I'd also be happy to offer my opinion as well.
