      [Sigh...]
I actually read a boatload of materials about the site and what it is, what to do, etc., before I joined.

Please do similarly, even if it's after-the-fact.

I always tell kids, when they say, "This is a stupid question, but...", that there are no stupid questions.

But your question tests the limits.

Do you know how to read?

      Sure you do.

Either you are a flamer or a troll, or you need to exercise your mind a bit better to figure out a few things here on HP before you pose a question like you did. Which is it?

      Ahhhh, I feel better now.

    Welcome to HubPages!

I'm not sure "why" someone would sign up for something and then have to ask what it is about?

However, HubPages is a professional writer's platform. You write articles on various topics or create sales pages to sell items.

You can write about almost anything, however, you should be careful and make sure you read the TOS(terms of service) of Google Adsense and HubPages.

I have a couple of hubs you can read, to give you more information.

Frogdropping wrote a couple of very cool hubs for new people.

Great question, one which we all have asked ourselves at one time or another, although I must say I haven't seen anybody really asked out loud before.

I tried answering that question myself by reading all the Help Pages in this site. Or as you have done, ask.

One last thing you can do is google it: Here is a site at wiki

What isn't it about? Think of Hubpages sort of like Wikipedia except with more freedom for the writers and less editorial discretion from the moderators. Since writers can make money from their Hubs, expect content to be less targeted at encyclopedia-type information are more geared towards products and services. Writers are also more free to express opinions on Hubpages, so you'll see many expressions of ideology and such.

Just a bunch of bored ego-maniacs, who do not have anything better to do and are writing about things they don't know anything about. Join the club.

It's a place where people come ask questions while not really seeking answers.

We all have been wondering about that ourselves.
What we did was we read a bunch of help pages, a bunch of hubs, a bunch of articles and asked a million questions.
And we still aren't really all that sure ourselves.

    Happy hunting.
