I often hear the word SEO but I don't really understand what it means, backlinks and stuffs.
If I write articles without SEO should I expect lower earnings?

Yes, without good SEO and keyword research you can expect to earn considerably less as people won't find your hub to read it.
Read hubs by Sunforged, Darkside and others about how to use good SEO. It is important and will be time very well spent.
