I am a certified teacher and have been tutoring young children for almost 40 years.

The Letter Ll:

I am going to discuss letter Ll today and some activities that you and the kids can have fun doing. Many children I’m sure have already memorized most of the letters of the alphabet and they are enjoying what they are doing, unlike in the past when the kids think that everything is a difficult task.

Now you can see the kids smiling and very confident when they say the letters of the alphabet loudly. This is because they are already confident that they are saying the correct letter and the correct sound of each letter.

When you teach letter Ll, it is better to teach la la la la la as the sound of Ll. Some kids will even sing the sound and this is good because the more they sing la la la la la, the better they will memorize the letter.

L is for laugh:

Show all the things that begin with Ll including names or other important words:

  • lad
  • lass
  • lantern
  • ladder
  • lamb
  • lawn
  • lemon
  • letter
  • leg
  • leader
  • lick
  • lips
  • litter
  • list
  • log
  • lock
  • lollipop
  • loader
  • lump
  • lungs
  • luggage

When you have finished showing the objects and naming important words that begin with Ll; you can ask the children if they know other things that begin with Ll. You can also ask the kids whose names begin with Ll. This will help them remember the letter better.

Don’t forget to review the past letters and their sound before the other activities.

More Activities for Ll:

Game

Give each child a letter. The letters should be those that you have studied plus letter L.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Tell the kids to hold the letters.
  2. Explain to them that when you call a letter, the children holding the letter will stand up.
  3. When all the children are standing. Get the letters they are holding and change it with another letter.
  4. This time tell them to sit down when the letter they are holding is called.
  5. You can repeat this if you want the kids to have more fun.

Art Time

This is a simple art project that every kid can do. You have to be ready with different kinds of leaves. Give each child one leaf, a bond paper and green crayon. Explain to the children how to do the art project.

Tell the children to put the leaf under the bond paper then show them how you rub the crayon just above the leaf under the bond paper. Keep rubbing until the leaf has been traced. This activity is a guided work and you have to move around and assist the kids who do not know how to do it.

The best leaf to use is something with very prominent veins so that the lines will be dark. Avoid using leaves that are too smooth and with very light veins.

After the project, you can give each child a lollipop as a reward for accomplishing the art project. Tell the kids that lollipop begins with letter Ll.

The Syllables

I’m sure the children know most of the syllables already and it is easier for them to write the syllables you are going to dictate. Dictation is best done every day for better reading enhancement. The more dictation you give the children, the more the children will learn to read.

Copying the syllables is also very helpful in reading. It is advisable to let the kids copy as often as they can.
