Math -- Solving System of Equations With 2 Variables

Updated on September 23, 2012
Source

What does it mean?

We get from our teacher 2 equations with 2 variables and we need to solve them. If you are here reading me so far...is because you like the way Lord handles the problem right?

Forget if its useful or why they torture you with these stupid equations; let's go to grab this bull by the horns!

If you ever moved from house to house, when you were a kid younger than now. Have you ever noticed how Mom and Dad put stuff in Boxes so nothing will break or get lost easily? That's what Mnemonics does, it helps to put your brain focus on something otherwise scary or hard to learn.

EXAMPLE

VARIABLES X,Y

FIRST EQUATION

3X+2Y=19

SECOND EQUATION

2X+Y=12

YOUR TEACHER ASKS YOU TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM, WHICH MEANS YOU HAVE TO FIND THE VALUE OF X AND Y

SOLUTION

WE ISOLATE Y IN THE SECOND EQUATION

2X+Y=12

Y=12-2X

WE REPLACE THIS Y IN THE FIRST EQUATION

3X+2(12-2X)=19

WE SOLVE THIS EQUATION WITH VARIABLE X..

IF YOU ARE NOT READY, GO TO MR. BOUNCER TRICK TUTORIAL

3X+24-4X=19

3X-4X=19-24

-X=-5

X=5

IF we know that x=5 then we can replace the value of x in any of the stated equations

let's use this one

2X+Y=12

2(5)+Y=12

10+Y=12

Y=12-10

Y=2

Now you wonder why we normal people have to learn all these? Well, is part of the education systems and we have to graduate from High School. Math is useful for other applications that these geeks bragg about. But don't get me wrong, math is like any subject...you've gotta pass it! and graduate!! Now, unless..you want to make graphics or games or future wii or X-Box games...huh? or maybe design future cars, huh?

NEXT SECOND WAY OF SOLVING IT

IN ANOTHER HUB...TAKE A BREAK SAMMY!

    Nice explanation of the substitution method of solving a system of simultaneous equations. Looking forward to your next hub on the linear combination method. Seriously, your explanations is clear and easily understood, as evidenced by the other comments from hubbers who were not math geeks.

    thanks for the memory ride into the past. I use math and algebra everyday building excel formulas for data base mining. Basic stuff that helps come up with answers for the boss. Sometimes I don't remember and off to the net I go, but this lesson I will remember, thanks again , , ,

    Very good LegendaryN8,

    The name Variable comes from its actual latin root variatus..."able to change" English borrowed it from Normandy after King William the Conqueror stormed England in 1066 at Hastings. It could've been worst in Babylonian times with the Cuneiform way of writing.

    HAVE a nice one!

    The problem I always had with algebra was that I didn't understand why sometimes the letter changed. Sometimes the unknown variable was X,A,Q,Y, etc. Once someone explained to me that it was just a "container" for the number, it made a lot more sense, because I just put the number into the "container".
