What is the difference between "seems to be" and "appears to be"?

What is the meaning of "seems to be" and "appears to be"? How one should use these terms in a sentence? This is always confusing for me. Please explain the difference with examples. For example, "He seems to be a good person" or "He appears to be a good person" Which one is correct? If both the sentences are right, then is there any difference between their meaning?
