A Friend is someone you know well enough to talk with should you meet up somewhere unexpected or offer you a ride as long as it isn't out of there way. Share a meal with, let you borrow there tools, drive you to the airport if you asked, as long as it's a reasonable hour. They will judge you.

A best friend is one you can call and talk to about most topics, they will offer to drive you most places, they would think to invite you over for a meal just because, they would offer to help you repair what ever you needed to borrow the tools for, they would offer to pick you up at the airport because they want to make sure you were not put out trying to find a ride home and they would answer your call for help so long as it isn't 4 a.m. on a Sunday/Monday morning. They will judge you also.

A true friend is unique, if you have one count yourself lucky- after 20  years of having kids, growing your family, a divorce, a drug habit, or one of life's problems you call them up and ask for a huge favor and they drop what ever they are doing no matter the hour to help.  Both of you pick up where you left off as if only a single day has past. They are the people that at your funeral cry because you are gone, at your birthday parties they are the ones that stay after everyone else is gone to clean up because it's your birthday and you shouldn't have to clean up, they are the ones that know when you are having a tough go of things to just stop by with a meal or a drink or just a smile to see that you are okay. It would never occur to them to judge anything you do.

So in my opinion you have your order of friends a little off, because I count a true friend as among the one thing in life we should treasure more than anything other than GOD.

I agree with Paulie on the order.

Next time you are sick you can tell the difference.

A friend is someone who you tell about it weeks later.
A best friend calls to talk and finds out about it.
A true friend doesn't need to be told because they are already in the kitchen making soup because they were there when you started getting sick!

When it comes to friendship, I think there should be no "differences". Being a friend is being a friend. The words "true" and "best" are just adjectives for the word friend.

  5. vocalcoach profile image97

The word "friend" can have several meanings.  To some, a friend can have reference to a person you are seeing on a regular basis, like a boyfriend or girlfriend. Friend can also mean an aquaintance, or someone you work with or spend time with. A friend can be a neighbor or even a relative.

A true friend, might be someone you can depend on for help or emergencies, someone you can really trust.  It can also be a person that you feel close to.

A best friend may be a person that you tell your deepest secrets and thoughts to.  You may not see them for years, but time doesn't change the relationship, the love you have for one another. You value your best friends opinion.  A best friend is like part of your family and sometimes even closer than your family. They are a part of you.

The stages of friendship are different for everyone.  You must be a true friend first to have a true friend.

A best friend, or true friend is someone who knows your faults and loves you anyway.

Good question - thanks for asking.

The stages of a friendship vary between gender.  In my experience, it seems that high school aged friendships between girls can be very flighty - meaning one day you're in, the next day you're out.

Guy friendships seem to have more of a 'brotherhood' quality to them and often with only one or two 'best friends'.  The issue here is trust, common interests, popularity and fitting in with those that are considered 'in'.

The longest friendship I've had started when I was in second grade and continued through a move to a different town for two years and back again.  We picked up right where we left off. In total, we were friends for almost 35 years. Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances the relationship eneded when my friend moved away with her family.

Without friends the world would truly be a lonely place.  We need to have the courage to seek out new ones when we have the opportunity.  And, that's more frequent than we might think!

A true friend to me is always there and never changes no matter even when your human, a best friend even when you are wrong or right is still a friend, a friend is just a casual acquaintenance that might think about you or not.  In my eyes a true friend is stable , supportive and see you mostly as the air water and the wind to you at heart like the other you.   A best friend is like when your up the first thought is you. A best friend will support you but I got things to do, a friend catch when can but still think of you.

A friend is someone who you shot the breeze with and go out on the town and have fun. A Best Friend is someone who you tell your secret and talk about boys and dating.  However a true friend is when each other can tell your secrets, about boys and have long conversations tell everything.  And especially know each other like you are family....

When you badly need money and if you are not sure whether you can get a loan from that person, he is a friend.

If the friend willingly loans you that money, he is a true friend.

If the friend forgets to ask that money back from you, he is the best friend!

It is so sad that we have to qualify the word "friend" in America. Elsewhere, a friend is a true friend: not a friendly colleague that you occasionally see outside the office, or a neighbor that you like and invite to a BBQ.

A friend is someone who cares about you and often keeps in touch.

A true friend is everything a friend is only they make sure they are there for whatever you need them for even, if they don't have the time.

A best friend grows with you, shares your secrets and never loses track of being your friend even when miles and time separate you for decades.

A friend is that who is at ease with us in speech, in action and in thought and we can always seek his help and company. Though unknown and  unrelated to us offer himself willingly in our hardship is our true friend. One who is almost our TRUE self and a privy to our secrets is our best friend.

A friend is someone who possibly has the same interests as a person and might be on their Facebook page for that reason.

A true friend would be the same thing in my opinion like a best friend because truth and best are both in the same category in my mind. The true best friend that I can mention here is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is true because He never sinned and He gave His life for sinners and would not abandon the sinners and sacrificed Himself with this very selfless deed. The very fact of doing this also made Jesus Christ the best friend of a Christian. Jesus Christ truly is the Christian's true and best friend.

In the world a true friend would be a person who never does anything negative to the person whom he or she has befriended. If any negative act was done then it was a very unimportant and forgiveness might have been involved to re establish trust.

A best friend in the world is a true friend who always stands by the person whom they are being the friend to and they have been friends for a long time, possibly since early childhood and the trust between such friend is very great. If someone has a best friend then that friend is also, most likely, a true friend.

Best Friend: Someone who will have your back no matter if you're right or wrong, but that person will also put you in your place when you step out of line, ride or die person, a person you will do anything for and the same goes for them, someone you can absolutely trust with your life and your heart and your secrets

Close Friend: A person who will have your back to an extent, someone who you keep close but also at a distance.

Good Friend is like an associate: someone you might talk to every once and a while, but you wont depend on them because you'll bond isn't that strong.

A friend is someone that goes out with you as a companion.

A true friend will share your secret and help in whatever way he/she can when you are in need. They will go out of their ways to accomplish it.

A best friend is someone who will give you a crying shoulder when you are sad and shop with you whenever they are available but will not go out of their ways to help you though.

The difference between a friend,, a true friend and a best friend is very clear from the following viewpoints:
Friend  -  He/She would accompany you till the road is manageable for him.. He may be with you when you have money to spend.

Best Friend- Who would discuss everything with you and share it oftenly, but I don't think a best  friend can sacrifice and devote his time for you when you are in dire need of a friend.

    True Friend
He or She will always care for you and help you every time you need..  He will rescue you when in emergency without letting you feel about the obligation. he has done for you.

Very interesting question. You are making puzzle with words and variations in meaning. There is a quotation "Friendship is a soul in two bodies". I think there may be more friend for us. But all  are may not true, that is lack of good bond. A best friend may be a person from whom we enjoy more. Our best friend and true friend may be near to us when we suffer........

  21. enjoy life profile image77

These days the meaning of 'friend' has changed so much. With sites like Facebook, we call people friends who we chatted to once online and sent a friends request to.

However that is very surface level and does not really describe what friendship is.

A friend is someone you enjoy being around and they you. You can spend time with them, share a laugh and talk about things.

A best friend is the one you don't get tired of being around, you can talk for hours and still enjoy their company. You can also sit in silence without it becoming an uncomfortable silence.

I believe a true friend can be either a friend or a best friend, however they are someone who is there for you in good times and bad. They know your weaknesses and strengths, yet still accept you for who you are. They can be honest with you (and you them) even when it is something you don't want to hear without it destroying the friendship. They are willing to tell you the truth , not just what you want to hear. Your friendship may have been through rough times, but it has not been destroyed. Instead it has become stronger.

A true friend does not abandon you when you need them. While a basic friend may only be around you when it is convenient for them, a true friend will go out of their way to help you and stand by you when others don't. Your friendship is more than skin deep.

You can share anything with a true friend and know they will not go around telling others about it. They will be confidential with what you share with them.

You don't really know a person is a true friend until the relationship has been tested. You may think they are a true friend, but you only know for sure when you go through a rough patch and they ares till there for you.

Have they had a chance to show how they are to you in tough times?
Have you seen them come through for you when you needed them most?
Have you shard things with them and they kept it confidential?
Do they know your weaknesses, yet still stand with you?

Life experiences will teach you, guide you, and remind you of previous mistakes that you have had in a ongoing, building uy a relationship or if you are involved with several, and are comparing for a "best" relationship, to keep.   I've found for myself, a 'friend' is someone, who is new and cautious of you and you may feel the same way back about them..They will seem very nice and very sweet to spend time with but allow time to further explore what they are about!  A 'true friend', is one you can usually count on, 'no' matter what the circumstances may be.  'Best friend', is really, great to have.  Usually around to help pick the pieces when your hopes and dreams have failed you and sometimes can turn into a life long friendship!

  27. Haynzie profile image60

A true friend would never stab you in the back, they are not just a fair weathered friend, they are not afraid to tell you the truth if they feel something your doing is either immoral, or even illegal, or just plain stupid, they're there for you through thick and thin, and they never forsake you if they or even you get married, they become very much like a sibling, don't care if you're hangin' around in your p.j.'s  if they just drop in for a visit.

A best friend is usually one you have through school, you do everthing, and go everywhere together. Spend time at each other's houses, but when you get beyond high school, and maybe on to college, your friendship fades, they find new friends, you find new friends, and rarely see each other, except maybe in passing.

However, sometimes, your best friend and true friend can be one in the same. It rarely happens, but when it does, hold on to them. They were meant to be in your life for a reason.

This is my description of the difference between true and best friends, it's neither wrong nor right, just different.

A friend is someone who I like, possibly admire, but not trust them with many secrets. I'll tell them things that I don't hold dear, and I'd do things for them if required. They wouldn't be my first priority if I was working on other things, but I'd be sure to help them when needed.

A true friend is someone who trusts me with their life, their most intimate secrets and would do just about anything to get me out of a jam. And as a true friend of theirs, I respect their wishes and accept any favours they might have for me in return for helping me out.

A best friend however is someone who has stuck with me through thick and thin. Where my true friends are about loyalty and protectiveness, my best friends entertain me the most, and have my years of living worth every second. I have two best friends, one from childhood, and the other who I love so deeply I do everything in my power to stay on his good side. A best friend is a friend for life; perhaps not a guardian angel like a true friend, but an angel nontheless.

All friends should be true, or else they aren't real friends. And a best friend is a definitely a true friend. However, not all true friends are considered a bestie, if that makes sense.

A best friend is someone with whom you are comfortable sharing secrets and have seen you at your vulnerable states. It's more than just hanging out and sharing jokes. You know each other, put up with each other and got each others back.

Johnathan.......A "Friend," can be someone you know and like.  They are people we will stop to chat with and exchange simple conversation with, now and then.  We may refer to people we work with or go to school with, as our "friends."

A "Best friend" is a special individual we have cultivated a close relationship with, over a period of time and experiences.  We place a best friend levels above our group of "friends in general."
We feel closer to a best friend and believe they can be trusted and relied upon in times of both happiness or sadness.  We know much more about our best friends, their families and lifestyle....and we become "like family" to one another.

A True friend, IMHO, is that person who has all the qualities and attributes of a BEST friend, through thick and thin and rarely if ever will not help or rescue us if needed.  A true friend is trustworthy, honest, helpful and confidential..  They would never betray us, lie to us nor allow others to hurt us.  A True friend is most always the one we will choose as our BEST friend.  The friendship with a true/best friend is one that has the potential to last throughout a lifetime.....all real aspects of friendship shared equally.

"Friend" is an ambiguous term, that Americans often confuse with a friendly  colleague, associate, neighbor, etc.  Sometimes people deliberately use it prematurely, to advance a friendship to the next stage. Strangely, it isn't unusual for us to socialize mostly with people in this first stage of friendship.

The next stage is good friend. A good friend is someone who loans you their car, takes you to the airport, takes your kids for a week so that you can get away with your significant other.

A true friend is someone that will likely be with you your whole life, even if you live at opposite ends of the country. A true friend does everything that a good friend does, but will also remain your friend, even if you fight. A true friend will tell you the truth, even if it isn't pleasant. A true friend will give you a place to live, when your house burns down. A true friend will be the one you confide in.

A best friend should always be a true friend. Don't accept anything less.

The only difference between those three is the label you've put in front of the word "Friend" Take the label off. You still get a friend. Put the label back -- you have a friend of self-prescribed importance. What if you had a very big problem and asked for help from all three of those friends and none responded? On the flip-side, what if all three showed up ready to support and help you? Who deserves which label in that case, my friend?

I dont know if there is a distinct difference between true and best friend, I always found best friend to be an elusive term, however a true friend compared to a friend could be very different. A true friend is honest, loyal, caring and compassionate.

a best friend is a walking diary to you, but if they were really your best friend, you would trust them, close friend is the friend who is there for you but you don't always hang out or talk to as much, good friend is someone you talk to sometimes, but nothing to personal, to me, it depends on what level of trust you guys are on

Well a friend can be anyone you get along with well enough to the point where you are willing to do activities with them, but they do not  have your full trust. It's only to a certain extent.

A true friend is really synonymous with best friend. A true friend is someone you can fully trust, who is going to be loyal and be by you no matter what. That is the role a best friend usually carries out.
