What are the main measures of a person's importance in a society? What makes a person a SOMEBODY? Levels of educational attainment?  Achievement of socioeconomic wealth? Attainment of status, power, and position in one's chosen career and/or vocation?  Having/achieving a high level of fame and influence?

It seems to be a popularity contest. Actors, sports stars, English princesses who do next to nothing except wear pretty clothes, Presidents of countries. Presidents make sense, the others don't.

How many scientists alive today do you know by name? A few probably.

How many Miley Cyrises?? Probably dozens.

What you have succinctly state is TRUE.  Success seems to equal celebrity these days.   If one is not famous nor a celebrity, he/she is discounted.  There are many successful and brilliant people who ARE'T celebrities.  They form an integral part of our communities and work environments.
