    Hi Dabeaner,
Almosr right but no coconut !

The Single Finger or  "Digitus Impudicus" (impudent finger) in Latin probably hails from  ancient Roman but there is also reference  to using the finger in ancient Greek comedy to insult another person. The widespread usage of the finger in many cultures is likely due to the geographical influence of the Roman Empire but how it got to the Americas is anybodies guess.

The gesture to which you refer is the old 'V' sign of the English archers towards the French as a sign saying look I still have my fingers.

In India its not done as the word is a private act not shown in public. However the use of language for this in Hindi by people is very common in slums only.

Well, when you fold all your fingers down except for that one, what does it resemble? LOL! It resembles that tool the male species have to do what they do with it...other than peeing.
