mud engineer is the person who has responsibility of the fluids that are being used for the drilling. Most likely will have a degree in chemistry and a reasonable knowledge of the drilling procedures.
You should have some background in chemistry, either through college or experience or be good at math and science. Most mud companies will train sharp people even if they don't have a college degree, though one helps. Prior oil rig experience is helpful as is knowing someone in the industry to use for a reference.
